Around the Campfire, with Roger Hutton
Howdy to all of you who receive the E-Drover.
Well, it is August and we are all hunkered down in this part of the country trying to just get through this last hot month of summer. So, there is not much going on in the Texas Longhorn world, but I do have a few things to talk to you about.
First, just a reminder that iRegister is now available for you to use when registering and transferring cattle. Just go to www.iregisteritla.com and set up your account it is really easy. If you need help just call the ITLA office.
Second, iRegister will make it very easy for you to take advantage of the ITLA/TLMA joint promotion, wherein effective August 1, and extending through October 31, breeders who are members of both organizations can register and transfer cattle with the ITLA at NO CHARGE.
If you are not a member we have a special promotional membership fee to help you take advantage of the special. If you have not received the e-basts announcing this special, you can get additional information in this issue.
Thirdly, I want to remind you that August 31 is the deadline for registering for the ITLA events (Annual Convention , Championship Show, and Futurity) at the Extravaganza, September 19 and 20 in Oklahoma City, You will not want to miss the Extravaganza. It is the most exciting event in the Texas Longhorn industry with events of interest to every breeder irrespective of your area of interest in our marvelous cattle. So, act now to register. See details in this issue. And remember, as you register, help us with sponsorship of the event. See opportunities inside.
I just hope that you will take advantage of the great opportunities I talked about above. The ITLA has worked very hard to bring them to you.
Goodbye for now and best wishes,
Roger Hutton

Affiliate News - Mountain States Texas Longhorn Association
| Young Brody Weston, 4, made his debut in cattle showmanship at the Field Day. Brody is the son of Candi and David Weston of Elizabeth, CO, and grandson of Longhorn breeders Barb and Norm Fillmore, of Elbert, CO. |
It has been a long time since my last article and so much has happened since then. First off, I learned that there are three types of people in this world: those who can count and those who can't. Second of all, the Good Lord was gracious enough to give us some much needed rain and reprieve from the hot weather and fires. The Bible says that God sends rain on the just and the unjust (Matthew 5:45). I always thought I fit into one of the two categories, but after a few months of no rain, I was beginning to wonder!
On July 6th, Randy and Marsha Witte of Red Ink Ranch hosted a "Texas Longhorn Field Day" for all Texas Longhorn enthusiasts at their home in Peyton, Co. It was a great day and attended by many people involved with ITLA's Mountain States Texas Longhorn Association and TLBAA's Mountains and Plains Texas Longhorn Association.
The day started off with Kenny Richardson giving a halter breaking demonstration on a few yearlings that the Wittes volunteered for the task. We then took a break for lunch; and let me say, if you went away hungry from that place, it was YOUR OWN FAULT! After lunch, Ashley Fillmore (Red Tail Hawk Ranch in Elbert, CO) gave a demonstration/lecture about showing cattle, what you would need to show, how to groom your cattle, proper attire, etc. Then there was a judging competition for anyone who wanted to try. ITLA Judge Stan Searle (Searle Ranch in Monument, CO) volunteered to judge the three classes and whoever came closest to his placement of all three classes won a plaque. John Nelson (Cloverbloom Ranch, Wellington, CO) kept track of the points. Gary Cole of Penrose, CO won the bragging rights as well as the plaque.
The next big thing the MSTLA has planned is a Longhorn sale the first weekend in August information at
http://searleranch.com/html/selectsale.html). You will regret missing this sale; so make plans to be there!
Lastly, I feel I should put in a plug for halter breaking cattle . . . especially your heard sires and future herd sires. Our bull Lever Action (Winchester x Day Dreamer) is out covering heifers for us this year, and for whatever reason, this morning he was in the bull pasture across the road. I went out with a horse and brought him up to the big pen but couldn't get him into the smaller pen where the load out was. About the third time he ran by me, I shook out a loop and roped him. Now, he's probably got close to 600lbs. on my gelding so I didn't expect we'd be able to pull him far. But, I got him stopped and stepped off my horse.
| Justin Johnson |
We halter broke this bull as a calf, so I fashioned a crude halter out of my rope, and led him right to the trailer and he jumped right in. Part of the reason I could do this is that this bull is a son of the great Winchester, and has a temperament exactly like his. I don't have enough time to say all the good things about Winchester, but you should get some Winchester cattle in your herd if you haven't already. Secondly, we hadn't haltered this bull in years, but when he felt the tug on the "halter" he knew to give to it. Halter breaking your future herd sires WILL save you time in the long run and you will use fewer bad words when your bull gets out, or you have to catch him for whatever reason.
That's all for now and that's probably a'plenty.
Take care of yourselves, and I hope to see you down the road sometime. ~Justin Johnson 1800justincase (at) gmail.com
Enjoy a couple pictures from our MSTLA Field Day - HALTER BREAKING Texas Longhorn Cattle
In a nutshell, Kenny Richardson of Greeley, CO, showed how he halter breaks Longhorn cattle by penning them two at a time in a four-sided pen of portable panels, reinforced with T-posts at each corner. He began outside the pen by rubbing the yearling steers all over with a show stick. Then he progressed to getting inside the pen with them (top photo) and using his hand to rub them. Once the steers accepted this-and even seemed to enjoy it-he was able to slip a halter on one of them. Back outside the pen, with two lead ropes tied together for extra length and attached to the halter, he tugged on the lead until the steer began to yield to the pressure. After that, he went outside the pen with the steer and in no time the steer was walking along with him, first on a long lead (bottom photo), then up close. The steers had not been handled previously, but the steer he continued working on was halter broke to lead in one and one-half hours.

The Sign
Every successful ITLA Texas Longhorn Show is only successful due to a large organized effort by a lot of people -- a lot of people thinking of a lot of details. The person who is on the phone generating last minute extra entries, the person who sprays water on the arena to keep the dust down and the person who places a sign on the main entry area. The first time guests has no idea the months and hours of work it takes -- always a labor of love by those who love the cattle.
Nothing helps people find the event like a bright, well placed sign. Although few ever know who put the sign up, all share in the good planning that makes these things happen. -Darol Dickinson

Dear Fellow NETLA Members:
The NETLA Board has approved the sponsorship of G&G Longhorns Fall Roundup's luncheon on Saturday, October 19th in Catlett, Virginia. This is a big event in the northeast with many breeders from the northeast in attendance. It is our hope that NETLA's presence will help to attract new members for the growth and future of our association. We invite any members, that can possibly make it to the event, to support the luncheon and the NETLA booth. Bring your calves to brand and your heifers to enter the futurity. Above all, come and have a good time fellowshipping with other breeders who share our passion.
If you want to bring a dish to share, please e-mail Kris Ruppert at krisruppert (at) hotmail.com. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me at 717-577-3347 or by e-mail at crazycattlecompany (at) yahoo.com.

A Note from Joe Assad on the Longhorn Extravaganza...
Howdy,
So many amazing things happened at the Texas Longhorn Extravaganza last year that they couldn't wait a whole year to have another one so they have moved it forward a month. This year the TLMA's World Championship Horn Measuring Contest and the 2013 International Texas Longhorn Championship Show and Convention will be September 19, 20, and 21, 2013 at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City. I hope we get to see you there.
Here are just a few of the amazing things that happened last year.
There were over 600 Texas Longhorns at the event and there were more people than cattle. Every one we met and spoke with was friendly, in a good mood and positive about the future of the Texas Longhorn industry.
There were over 300 of the longest horned Texas Longhorn Bulls and Cows in the breed under one roof. It was fun to see an outstanding bull or cow in person that you had only previously seen pictures of and then compare it with another great one two stalls down.
The world record was set at the horn measuring when the 90" tip to tip Rio Catchet Cow was officially measured, and the bull Clear Win was the largest horn base measured in history at 19 11/16".
The arena was set up with the World Championship Horn Measuring on the left and the International Texas Longhorn Championship Show on the right. With a slight turn of one's head, the audience could enjoy both.
There was a Texas Longhorn Sale, educational symposiums, social events, awards banquet and breakfast, the ITLA's annual meeting and installation of new officers and an outstanding ITLA Youth Show, all in two days. Everyone was tired but no one was bored. Not only was it something to see, it was an event we were proud to be a part of.
Did I mention Darol Dickinson bought us a steak dinner? For a life insurance agent to have an insured client buy his dinner is truly amazing!
Happy Trails,
Joe Assad, Houston, Texas

Affiliate News: The Ohio River Valley Texas Longhorn Association
The 16th annual Ohio River Valley Texas Longhorn Show was held July 13th at the Hartford Fairgrounds in Croton Ohio. Judge Bryan Gilvesy gave his evaluation on over 80 entries at this year's show. The show was opened with Gail Beach from Indiana presenting the colors along with her steer, Oliver, while those present sang the National Anthem. Before the show, the youth were honored with a small gift and recognized before the crowd for their participation in this years show.
This year there were 12 youth that showed, ages 3 to 16 yrs old showing in one or more classes. The bovine bingo heifer donated by Duck Creek Cattle Company was won by Gail Betterly. Gail is a long time vendor of the show and she had the heifer auctioned off and gave the money from the sale back to the ORVTLA to be used for the youth program. Thanks to Gail for supporting our youth.
Next stop for Ohio River Valley is September 14th in Mansfield Ohio at Sherer Farm hosted by John and Martha Sherer. This is our field day for this year. Topics of the day will include pasture management, a pasture tour with the quest speakers, and record keeping. Last year's field day was great and this years promises to be just as good.
Mark your calendar for September 14th and plan on being there.
Tim Mills
ORVTLA President

Affiliate News - the Ontario Texas Longhorn Association (Canada)
On the first Sunday in July members, Jean and Murray Johnson, Don and Dona Stewardson, Martyn and Krista Mulder, Gord and Carolyn Tuer headed on our way to the new ranch of Darryl and Sue Swain for our last meeting of the year. It was overcast and rainy but by noon the sun was shining making it a perfect day for the meeting.
As we arrived, Darryl and Sue showed us around their new home. It is an old log cabin they have fixed up and it is just as cozy as can be. Their new ranch consists of 20 acres and is home to 6 Longhorns and their horses, chickens, cat and dog. Everyone was made to feel welcome as they arrived.
We all bring food to share, and lunch was great as usual. Stories of what everyone was doing were shared. Jean Johnson, our president opened the meeting. New members Martyn and Krista were welcomed. Secretary Becky Trembley resigned and Krista was nominated as our new secretary. The treasurer's report was given by Carolyn Tuer. Memberships were paid by Martyn and Krista and Don and Dona.
Members discussed many ways on how to promote our Longhorns and different ways to sell our meat. Martyn and Krista are also in the dairy business and the family has built new additions to their dairy barn. They asked members to attend their open house which will be in the near future. We will be able to set up a display, offer our association hats to those who are interested in owing Longhorns. We thank Martyn and Krista for this great opportunity. They will be serving Longhorn burgers to those attending at the noon hour. This is just a great way to advertise the Longhorns. Their Longhorns will be in the field showing off their colour and horns with our display set up in front. Gord will have a finished skull and horns their for all to see along with information on why one should raise Longhorns.
Members are asked to bring ideas to the next meeting which will be held in April, 2014 at the farm of Gord and Carolyn Tuer. We read the affilate news from other associations and their ideas are often used by us. We say thanks to all associations for sharing their news and ideas. Members were reminded of the ITLA convention to be held in September.
The meeting was then adjourned and yes the best was saved till last. Out to the pasture field we go and the Swain's Longhorns showed off their best. Members chat and ask questions as they walked around the Longhorns.
It was a perfect, fun filled day and Darryl had been busy painting outdoor chairs all colours so one had a choice of a coloured chair to sit in and visit until they departed. The chairs were as pretty as the Longhorns and we thank Darryl and Sue for just a great day.
We are always hoping for new members to join so if you are owners or looking to own Longhorns in Ontario Canada just give our president Jean a call and she will provide you with the best info. Her phone # is 519-396-8583 and the address is R.R.# 2 Kincardine, Ontario Canada N2Z 2X4. We are also on facebook under Ontario Texas Longhorn Association. See you in April at our next meeting.

Chewing the Cud...
Buford was an old Cowboy who had never travelled much. He finally decided he would, and decided to fly out of New York City. He walks into the biggest NYC bank and says to the teller that he wants to take out a loan for $5000 so he can go to Europe for a week. The teller says, "we'll need collateral for a loan of that size for this purpose." The Cowboy takes out the keys to his brand new, Four Wheel Drive Dually Pickup, and says "I guess this should work for ya. "
The teller immediately calls his supervisor, who calls his boss, who has some one check out whether the truck was stolen, but it turns out this old boy bought that truck from a reputable dealer earlier that day. So they accept the truck as collateral, park it in the bank's garage and secured the keys in the vault. Old Buford took his money and moseyed on out of there and went to see Europe.
Buford comes back a week later and says that he'd like to pay back the loan and get his truck back. So he pays back the $5000 plus $5 for the interest.
The teller says, "We ran a background check on you, and you're very wealthy already. Why did you take a loan for a week long trip to Europe and put a truck down as collateral?"
Looking up from his check book Old Buford says, "Where else in NYC can I pay $5 to park my Truck for a week and expect it to be there when I get back?"
