October 2023

Greetings from the Membership Comittee

It’s our busy season! The Membership Committee and staff are hard at work to recruit new women to Impact Austin, support new members, and organize gatherings that keep us all connected. Our members are the key to our collective community impact. Even as we celebrate $8.43 million in past grants, we must continue to bring in new members that build our future collective giving. Simply put, more members = more robust grants. We love to present those big checks to Community Partners, right? So, let’s work collectively to sustain our high-impact tradition.

Here's what you can do to help.

  • Do you have 1 minute? How about 3 or 5? A few minutes of your time can inspire someone to join. This blog article gives you simple tips and sample language.
  • Invite a friend to attend an Impact Austin event with you.
  • CONNECT events are casual opportunities to network and chat with other Impact Austin members.
  • Membership Info Sessions are just that. Often held in member homes, these are specifically designed to share Impact Austin’s history and impact and answer guests’ questions.
  • Member Connections events are curated for existing members, but they’re also open to guests and anyone interested to know more about Impact Austin.
  • Town Hall Meeting on November 14 will bring it all: an inspirational keynote speaker, 4 new grants, and stories of our grant outcomes. This is a great opportunity to invite a friend!
  • Take a colleague or friend to coffee, lunch, or happy hour. Share what is special to you about Impact Austin. Invite her to learn more – and join us!

Let’s Grow!

Town Hall Meeting - November 14

A very special Town Hall is being planned at Temple Beth Shalom from 5:00-8:00 PM on November 14! The 2023 theme is “Igniting the Power of Philanthropy." Joining us that night as keynote speaker will be Sara Lomelin, Founding CEO of Philanthropy Together

A self-proclaimed philanthropy disruptor, Sara has traveled the world speaking about the power of collective giving at high-profile conferences and events, including TED 2022 where she delivered her talk, "Your Invitation to Disrupt Philanthropy." Recently, Sara was named to Forbes’ 50 Over 50: Impact List.

Impact Austin will award four Equity and Health & Well-Being Grants that night. Celebrate as our total grantmaking grows beyond $8.58 million!

Registration will open soon, and your guests are welcome! Stay tuned for details as they develop.

Member Connections Events

Last month, we bragged on the Member Connections team. We’re doing it again! Check out their webpage and the blog article about their work. New members (and any members ready to re-engage) are invited to an in-person New Member Orientation on Oct 12 at Café Crème. New members may also be interested in the Quick Start Guide on our website. It’s full of tips and links for ways to get involved now that you’re a member.

MC volunteers are curating events that connect members of ALL tenures with social gatherings and hands-on volunteering. Find upcoming events in October, November, and December here.

Philanthropy Education

On September 29, Impact Austin offered a hybrid learning event, “Civic Engagement as a Tool for Impact.” The audience joined in-person at the Austin Area Urban League and by live-stream. The recap blog and video are here. Thank you to our panelists and moderator, whose bios are on our blog: Eric Byrd, Shelly Baker, Yvonne Massey Davis, and Amy Stansbury. Thanks also to Philanthropy Education sponsors FVF Law Firm and Polaris Executive Talent Advisors.

This event provided follow-up to philanthropy education offered in April 2023 and titled, “Texas Legislative Update: Nonprofit Impact.” Find the recap blog and video of that April event here. The September 2023 content is intended to motivate action based on our April learning.

Leadership

Impact Austin’s Strategic Advisory Council has new co-chairs: Susan Palombo and Nancy Vera. They step into roles created by Becky Austen and Lorene Phillips. From the original cohort of 28 SAC members, 14 will continue their work. Read Becky Austen’s recap of the Council’s work in FY 2022 and 2023.

Grantmaking

Fall Grants - Site Visits Scheduled

This week, Grant Review Committees have performed site visits with the six semi-finalists named in the Equity and Health & Well-Being focus areas. Later this month, two finalists in each focus area will be identified. Members will receive finalist packets that contain all the information necessary to vote between Oct 31-Nov 9. A total of $158,400 in Fall Grants will be awarded at our Town Hall Meeting.

Girls Giving Grants

The 2023-2024 class of Girls Giving Grants (g3) is 58 members strong! Thanks to extra donations and funds raised through Amplify Austin, they were able to announce their $8,500 grant opportunity to the nonprofit sector. Applications are being accepted now through Oct 27 at 5:00 PM. Check out all g3 awards here.

Community Partner Spotlight

In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sep 15-Oct 15), let’s celebrate Community Partners and grants that have specifically supported our Hispanic neighbors. Check out the See Our Impact webpages that share details of grants and the outcomes of our Partners’ work.

Many of our Community Partners offer programming and support to Central Texas immigrants, not exclusively Hispanic and Latine residents. Thank you to American Gateways, Austin Asian Community Health Initiative, Casa Marianella, Interfaith Action of Central Texas, Manos de Cristo, and Southwest Key Programs.
