Decatur Safe Streets Community Meeting on January 23

Safety Action Plan Community Meeting #2

Thursday, January 23, 2025, 6-8 pm

The City of Decatur will host the final community meeting for its Safety Action Plan Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the Decatur Recreation Center (231 Sycamore Street, Decatur, GA 30030) from 6 to 8 p.m.

Community members are encouraged to attend this drop-in, open-house event to hear from the project team on how data and community input has shaped the preliminary policies and actions for this plan. As a part of the open house, the City will share the High Risk Network, an important new policy tool that will help guide roadway safety initiatives and actions moving forward. The planning team will also share key takeaways from data analysis and past engagement activities that have informed preliminary plan recommendations and strategies.

Between 2018 and 2022 (the most recent five-year crash reporting period), Decatur reported six crashes that resulted in at least one fatality and 44 crashes that resulted in at least one serious injury. There were no fatal crashes in 2019 and 2020. The Vision Zero standard, based on an international movement to end traffic fatalities, commonly aims for zero traffic fatalities in several consecutive years. "Decatur Safe Streets" puts the City on a path towards a year and then five or more consecutive years without traffic fatalities.

Safety improvements at our neighborhood entrance at North Decatur and North Superior are directed by this process. Your CHCA board members have pursued our interests by engaging with city (and DeKalb county) officials over many years at meetings like this.

We seek to make the intersection as safe as possible while plans and funding are slowly coordinated by all of the parties involved in this busy traffic corridor: Decatur, DeKalb, and the Georgia DOT (which controls the 5-way intersection at the top of the hill).

Neighbors have certainly noticed several of the short term improvements described on the slides below. All of the recommended items have been installed within the last few months.

MLK Day Service Projects

MLK Service Project Weekend — January 18-20, 2025

Interested in joining a service project for MLK weekend? Here are two opportunities.

Decatur's MLK. Jr. Service Project is a local organization that seeks to harness community volunteers to assist City of Decatur veteran and senior homeowners to safely and comfortably remain in their homes by providing house maintenance and repair. The organization offers free home repairs for older residents, and volunteers can sign up for 4-hour shifts on every day of the 3-day weekend. Since 2003, project volunteers have installed handicap ramps, replaced rotten wood, weatherized homes, repaired water damage and worked with professional partners to do plumbing, electrical, and HVAC work. REGISTRATION REQUIRED FOR VOLUNTEERS AHEAD OF TIME:
