EMERSON SUNDAY
On May 15, the First Unitarian Church in New Bedford will welcome Ralph Waldo Emerson re-enactor Wendell Refior for Emerson Sunday. Mr. Refior will be delivering the sermon as Emerson at the church service at 11 am, with a luncheon to follow. There will also be a short series of lectures beginning at 1:30. Dr. Fred Gifun will discuss the Quaker schism of the 1820's and Emerson's connection to the church, where he served as minister briefly in 1833-34. Local historian Bob Maker will give a short talk about Emerson's secular lectures in New Bedford. Wendell Refior will give the final presentation/discussion, entitled, Human Culture: Emerson's Emphasis on the Ideal. The church is asking for a $10.00 donation for the lectures, but the service and lunch are free. All are welcome to attend.
DOWNTOWN CEILI
hosted by the First Unitarian Church in New Bedford
Saturday, May 28, 2016 6-9 PM
Ceili: a social event at which there is folk music and singing, traditional dancing, and storytelling. This is the first monthly Downtown Ceili at the First Unitarian Church in New Bedford! We're adapting this Scottish and Irish tradition to our unique New Bedford style. Instrumentalists, vocalists, dancers, and artists of all stripes and skill levels are invited to attend and participate in this new monthly gathering. This event is FREE and open to the public and non-participants are very welcome to come and watch/listen. There will be an Open Jam session for a portion of the evening - music will be provided and each participant can adapt it to their instrument. All are welcome to participate in the Open Jam, including dancers and other physical performance artists. During the second portion of the evening, there will also be opportunities for individual performance artists or groups to sign up and perform for the gathered for up to 10 minutes. These spaces will be FIRST COME FIRST SERVE and a signup sheet will be available at the door. If we have high turnout and many individuals and groups wish to share, the time may be cut down to 5 minutes each. Acoustic instruments are ideal for this setting but there are a limited number of electrical outlets available for those who need them. This is intended as an opportunity for artists of all levels to meet each other, learn from each other, and connect to the wonderful musical community we have here in New Bedford in a safe, supportive environment.
