Dear Friends,
Here comes the fall! ...and with it many exciting developments here at the Duncan Foundation.
Our fall plans include teaching and performing in New York City and beyond. We will be touring our newly reconstructed (NEA supported) Duncan works including The Rakoczy March and The Slow March to colleges and main stages in our program "The Art of Isadora", with narrations from Isadora's own words interwoven with her signature solos and group works.
Looking ahead to May 2012, will be returning to the Judson Memorial Church Theater to celebrate Isadora's 135th birthday with performances, lectures, symposiums, and workshops for all ages.
Big news! In 2012, a commemorative U.S. postage stamp will be issued honoring Isadora Duncan. This comes years after the Isadora Duncan Centenary Committee, formed in 1970 and headed primarily by Julia Levien and Hortense Kooluris, spent years petitioning the U.S. Postal Service for such a commemorative stamp. What a triumph for Isadora to finally receive such recognition!
Every summer I take the opportunity to read a wide variety of publications and I comb through used-books stores and flea markets for unique items. This summer I came across a coffee table tomb OUR TIMES: The Illustrated History of the 20th Century. Of course Isadora was there, but they got her wrong again. Fortunately, although they claimed that "she had no coherent technique to pass on...", she was given plenty of weight as a legendary artist that inspired generations of dancers and artists.
See below details of our fall activities - I hope to see you at one of them!

The Archaeology Committee of The National Arts Club along with the Archaeological Institute of America is delighted to present Isadora on the Acropolis, an illustrated lecture. Focusing upon Isadora Duncan Dancing at the Acropolis will be four panelists: Founder and Artistic Director of the Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation dancer Lori Belilove, Archaeology Committee Chair Michele A.F. Kidwell, Dr. Mark Rose who is integral to all of NAC's unique programs, and specialist in archival photographs Professor Andrew Szegedy-Maszak of Wesleyan University. This evening celebrates the extraordinary inspiration of Athens upon this revolutionary genius of modern dance. The Acropolis, with its greatest monument the Parthenon, has threaded a magical web through many of NAC's past events.
Ms. Belilove will trace Isadora's path and inspirations, from her early days in California where she donned a Grecian inspired tunic, to London where she haunted the British Museum, to Paris where she assumed poses similar to those seen in vases for her sibling Raymond to sketch. Thoughts of the Classical world exerted a siren's beckoning call over her very being. Arriving in Greece in 1904, Isadora wrote in My Life "a great, longing impatience for the Parthenon finally prevailed...with trembling limbs and hearts faint with adoration, ascending the steps of her Temple...I was born for the first time in that long breath and first gaze of pure beauty...for here was Beauty too sacred for words."
Ms. Belilove's half hour discussion at 6:00 on Isadora's legacy and fabulous life "more adventurous than any cinema" precedes the formal program. The discussion will be accompanied by brief clips of Vanessa Redgrave in The Loves of Isadora as well as renown photographs taken by her brother Raymond Duncan and Edward Steichen. This spiritual pilgrimage is particularly fitting on this date, as it commemorates the anniversary of Isadora's tragic demise in 1927.
