A Message from JASC Board President Stacy Uchida Brown

Dear JASC Family,

I’m deeply honored and thrilled to share some exciting news about the next chapter for the Japanese American Service Committee (JASC).

Courtney Sakai has officially joined us as our new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

This is a moment of great accomplishment for all of us. Courtney steps in to lead JASC just as we prepare to open our newly renovated “Forever Home” and celebrate Michael Takada’s well deserved retirement.

Courtney Sakai

JASC's NEW CEO

As CEO, Mike Takada has led JASC through some transformative years. For the last decade, he’s guided the organization through tremendous growth. Under his leadership, we’ve been steadfast in our mission to make JASC an inclusive destination center for everyone interested in Japanese American history, culture, and community. Now with our new facility opening this year, it’s the perfect moment for him to pass the baton to Courtney.

Please join me in welcoming Courtney to the JASC family!

Courtney comes to us from Washington, DC with over 20 years of experience in nonprofit leadership, most recently as the Chief Strategy and Communications Officer at Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP). She brings strengths in nonprofit management, strategic planning, fundraising, and community building, internally and externally—all things that will be vital as JASC continues to grow.

What truly stood out to us during the search process was her understanding of the Japanese American experience, passion for community-centric work, and connection to our mission as we set out to envision the future and evolving needs of those we serve. We feel so fortunate to have her join and play a key leadership role in the community here in Chicago.

Knowing that Mike planned to retire after the building project was completed, we conducted a national search to find the right person to continue JASC’s legacy. Thanks to the efforts of our volunteer Search Committee and our search firm, DHR Global, we reviewed over 360 candidates.

The interest and passion we heard for what we are doing and where we are going at JASC reinforced great confidence in the promising future ahead. After careful consideration, Courtney was the clear choice. She’s the right leader for this new era, and I know she’ll bring great energy and fresh ideas to the role.

Over the next few weeks, Mike will work closely with Courtney to ensure a smooth transition of his administrative duties. He then will solely focus on a strong finish of the Serve, Preserve, Grow Campaign that will fund the remaining renovations for the building project. Thank you to those who have supported the Campaign - it truly takes a village!

Mike’s official last day will be on December 12th when we host the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and celebrate his retirement in grand fashion. More details coming soon! But even though he’s stepping down as CEO, he will continue to remain deeply involved in our community.

Congratulations, Mike, and thank you for everything you’ve done for JASC and beyond! The impact you’ve made will be a permanent part of JASC's legacy.

We’re also gearing up for our first public event in our new space—Holiday Delight, Kodomo Matsuri Children’s Festival—on December 14. This will be a great opportunity for everyone to come together, see the new facility, and meet Courtney in person. Please look out for ways to attend and support the event. We look forward to seeing you there.

I’m so proud of everything we’ve accomplished together and excited for what’s to come. Thank you all for your continued support, and I can’t wait to celebrate these milestones with you.

Warmly,

Stacy Uchida Brown
