Are you ready to attend a community meal and support a good cause?
Based on the idea of Soup & Bread community meals, we are hosting our own community meal and gathering.
How does this work?
Volunteer soup makers bring a crock pot of their favorite soup to share. JASC provides rice, bowls and spoons. Soup eaters make a donation with all funds raised going to a local nonprofit organization.
Come join the fellowship and fun for a good cause Friday, September 23.

JASC Volunteer Takako Day to present Urban History Seminar at Chicago History Museum
Breaking the Japantown Stereotype: Who Were the Japanese and Japanese Americans in Chicago 1865–1940?
Dedicated JASC volunteer, award-winning freelance writer, and independent researcher Takako Day will be presenting an Urban History Seminar for the Chicago History Museum on Thursday, October 13th, 7:00-8:15 p.m. CDT. Click here to RSVP!
The Urban History Seminar series feature a scholarly presentation followed by lively discussion. Takako Day, independent researcher, and Michael Day, Professor of English and Director of the First-Year Composition Program at Northern Illinois University, present “Breaking the Japantown Stereotype: Who Were the Japanese and Japanese Americans in Chicago 1865–1940?”
Most people think of the Japanese as so group-oriented that they would naturally form Japantowns, enclaves for Japanese immigrants in US cities. Yet, unlike their counterparts on the West Coast who were subject to strong racism, the Japanese in Chicago felt free to live where they chose, based on their own sense of individuality and self-identity. Join Takako and Michael Day to learn about the many and varied lives of Japanese immigrants, as well as their families and their professions, introducing, through Chicago history, a new aspect of Japanese American history in the United States.
The Zoom session will open at 6:45 p.m. with the program starting at 7:00 p.m. and concluding by 8:15 p.m. RSVP is required.
This session is free of charge; CHM would greatly appreciate a donation to the Museum in any amount. A Zoom link will be provided after registration.

Bass Dreams minus B and Maxwell-Thomas
Friday, Oct. 21st | Elastic Arts | 8PM
3429 W Diversey Ave #208, Chicago, IL 60647
We’re so happy to welcome back our friends with Asian Improv aRts Midwest as they present post-grunge band Maxwell-Thomas from Chicago and the return of Tatsu Aoki’s Bass Dreams minus B!
Maxwell-Thomas is a post-grunge, alternative rock collective led by songwriter, Stephen Mortensen. From its debut release in 2010, the 6-song EP, “The Ghosts I’ve Touched” to 2021’s full album, “Daisuki Baby,” Maxwell-Thomas has had numerous friends and collaborators touch its music. In 2022, the band finds its current line up energized by the eclectic drum stylings of Jun Takanarita, the dirty guitar slinging of Quinn Dean, and the pounding, pulsating rhythms of bassist, Tim Schiltz. Motivated by one passion, the desire to rock, Maxwell-Thomas finds itself at a career-peak as the group perfects an all killer, no filler set list. Taking inspiration from artists like Foo Fighters, the Pillows, and even iconic video game soundtracks such as “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” and “Persona 5,” Maxwell-Thomas is intent on delivering a performance that is tight, polished, and brimming with electricity. Stream Maxwell-Thomas anywhere you find digital music. Search “Mistreat Me” or “Scattered” to hear fan favorites.
Evening lineup:
8PM Bass Dreams minus B
9PM Maxwell-Thomas
$15 - Tickets Available at the Door
Find this event on Facebook and Elastic Arts.
