JASC will be hosting a COVID vaccine clinic on Friday, November 3rd from 10am-11am. The administered shot will be the most up to date COVID-19 vaccine, which targets the Omicron subvariant XBB strain that is the most common circulating right now. Regardless of previous vaccination history, the CDC recommends a single dose of the updated COVID-19 vaccine for most people.

Legacy Center Service Changes

Due to JASC’s planned move and upcoming staffing changes, the JASC Legacy Center is temporarily suspending all public services. This means that until further notice, we are unable to provide any of the following:

  • Reference service
  • Research appointments
  • Reproduction services
  • Programming and outreach
  • Donation consultations

This service disruption is necessary in order for Legacy Center staff to prepare the collections to be moved as safely as possible. Service will resume and new donations will be accepted as soon as the move has been completed and new staff have been hired. At present, there is no exact date for re-opening.

During this period, we recommend consulting our wealth of digital resources and the recommended resources list on our new website.

We thank you for your understanding and patience!

Among the offerings is an exhibit developed collaboratively by NPL and the JASC Legacy Center. Thriving Beyond Injustice: The Chicago Japanese American Journey provides an overview of Japanese American immigration, pre-war life, WWII incarceration, resettlement in Chicago, and present-day community life. The exhibit features images of several items from the Legacy Center’s archives and will be on display from the end of September to the end of October. Visit our neighbors to the north to check out this exhibit for free, any time the library is open! Click here for hours and location information.

3429 W Diversey Ave #208, Chicago, IL 60647

Celebrate the 28th year of the annual Chicago Asian American Jazz Festival (CAAJF) presented by AIRMW!

Day One features solo sets by Chicago-based Takashi Shallow and Pittsburgh-based Devon Osamu Tipp

Takashi Shallow is a socially specific artist whose experiments complicate notions of medium. His ongoing projects include operating the label Gesamt, organizing Percent–a collective of mixed race artists–and independently publishing Insider Art, a series of critiques. Dazed Digital includes Shallow in the article 10 of the best Chicago artists right now, and he has received fellowships and residencies at institutions like the Arts Club of Chicago and the Cliff Dwellers. He shows work at spaces like Links Hall and Elastic Arts and is a lecturer at the University of Chicago where he teaches art, music, and fashion.

Devon Osamu Tipp shakuhachi player, composer, and visual artist whose research focuses on the intersection between traditional Japanese music, contemporary musical praxis, microtonality, and noise music.

Day Two features a special album release live show of Hitomi Oba's 'Water Stem'

Hailed by the LA Times as a “powerfully inventive” and “remarkably versatile L.A. musician with a penchant for crossing all over the musical place,” saxophonist and composer Hitomi Oba’s work emphasizes the integration of improvisation with pre-composed music. She has written for and performed in various jazz and classical new music settings, including a commission by the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Green Umbrella series and a multi-genre cantata with her new music collective, L.A. Signal Lab. Her second jazz album, “Negai,” released under Japanese label M&I and distributor Pony Canyon, received a prestigious “Swing

Journal 42nd Annual Jazz Disc Award.”
