Following the Covid-19 guidelines for the city and state, we are now resuming in-person gatherings at JASC for our Conversation Table.

JASC's Conversation Table welcomes everyone to share their experiences, ideas, and stories through social interaction, and offers an opportunity to expand their social networks with others in the local community.

ISHRAB Grant Proposal Accepted

The JASC Legacy Center was recently notified that we have been awarded a grant from the Illinois State Historical Records Advisory Board (ISHRAB). The funding originates from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) and is distributed as small grants from ISHRAB to enable institutions like the Legacy Center to develop and/or carry out projects to identify, preserve, access, and use historical records in Illinois.

The one-year grant will fund transcription and processing of oral histories in the Legacy Center’s collections so we can continue to grow the publicly accessible online portal. Did you know you can already access 50+ interviews in our digital collection? With this new grant, we’ll be able to make even more of our oral history collection accessible online!

JASC thanks ISHRAB, NHPRC, and the Illinois State Archives for making this important work possible.

Film Footage of Japanese American Life in Chicago,

1940s-1950s

A compilation video of clips showcasing Japanese American Life in Chicago during the 1940s and 1950s was screened at JASC’s recent 75th anniversary event. In case you missed it, we’ve now added the video to the JASC Youtube channel for all to enjoy! Click here to watch the video.

The featured selections are from the Albert Nakaji Torii family collection and the Sumie Tanimura collection in the JASC Legacy Center’s archives. The films were digitized from silent 16mm and 8mm color home movies in 2019 and 2020 with the help of Kioto Aoki and the Chicago Film Archives.

Internet Essentials

Internet Essentials is the nation’s largest and most comprehensive broadband adoption program, providing high-speed Internet service to low-income families. Over the past ten years, Internet Essentials has connected a cumulative total of more than 10 million people to the power of the Internet at home. The program has expanded its eligibility more than a dozen times, now including Federal Pell Grant recipients. New customers who sign up for Internet Essentials before June 30, 2022, will receive 60 days of complimentary service. Emergency Broadband Benefit

Comcast is proud to participate in the federal government’s Emergency Broadband Benefit program. This temporary benefit provides up to a $50/month credit per household for their Internet bill (up to a $75 credit in Tribal areas). To date, the Federal Communications Commission has enrolled more than 4.2 million U.S. households. While this program is set to expire 6 months after the Department of Health and Human Services declares an end to the pandemic, the federal Infrastructure bill calls for a permanent plan, which would provide $30/month for eligible applicants. Asian Improv aRts Midwest Presents:

Mai Sugimoto / Fred Jackson / Isaiah Spencer

Elastic Arts | Saturday, June 18th | 8:00PM -10:30PM

3429 W Diversey Ave #208, Chicago IL 60647

Mai Sugimoto will be playing an improvised set joined by Fred Jackson (reeds) and Isaiah Spencer (drums).

Mai Sugimoto is a saxophonist, composer, and active member of Chicago’s jazz and improvisational music scene. Sugimoto draws inspiration from her upbringing in Japan and her roots in jazz to compose and perform from her unique multicultural experience. Born/Raised, her debut album (Asian Improv Records, 2018), explores this cultural and musical binary, juxtaposing, among others, a jazz rendition of a Japanese children’s song alongside compositions inspired by the American jazz idiom. Sugimoto is also a core member of the quartet Hanami, whose two albums similarly mix Japanese culture into creative music. Mai has performed three times at the Chicago Jazz Festival: in 2015 with Hanami, in 2019 as a leader, and in 2018 with renowned bassist Tatsu Aoki, with whom she frequently plays, including appearances in his Fred Anderson Legacy Band. Her first solo album, monologue (Asian Improv Records) was released in March of 2021.

$15 Tickets are available at the Door
