Greetings!
We have been as busy as a hurricane around here...and the impact of Hurricane Sandy has been felt by the U.S. and Haiti alike. Granted, Haiti's ability to recover and rebuild is greatly hampered, but when we received a text from one of the growers in Baraderas saying he heard the hurricane hit the U.S. hard and that he could 'feel our pain', we knew we were living in solidarity. Our world is smaller when we journey together.
This month we unveil a new name and labels for our coffee. We will begin using new and improved coffee bags, too. Just Haiti, Inc is featured in the Fair Trade Federation gift guide for this holiday season and awareness of our product continues to grow.
Read on for these and other updates.

Shop on Fair Tuesday
Tuesday, November 27, 2012
Fair Tuesday (hashtag #FairTuesday) is a fair trade initiative created in response to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The goal of #FairTuesday is to inspire conscious consumerism and show how an everyday purchase can change lives in a whole community.
Take part in this initiative by purchasing Just Haiti coffee for yourself or as gifts. Be sure to encourage others to do the same. |
Fair Trade Towns and Universities Conference in Chicago
Midwest volunteers staffed a booth for Just Haiti at the 2nd annual Fair Trade Towns and Universities Conference held in Chicago. The conference welcomed committee representatives from towns and schools across the nation interested in promoting fair trade products in their area. Interest in Just Haiti Coffee and its FAIR TRADE PLUS model was very high.
One question that many conference participants asked us was why Just Haiti Coffee was not 'Fair Trade Certified'. Just Haiti, Inc. is a member of the Fair Trade Federation, and so we have been fully vetted and approved as a Fair Trade business. However, in order for the producers to be Fair Trade Certified, coffee growers in Haiti must pay a sum of money to the international certifying organization, which comes out of the profit that we send to the coffee growers (see Fair Trade Plus model). In addition, the growers would be required to submit reports in French to the headquarters located in Europe. Growers do not have electricity or easy access to internet, and most do not speak French.
If you have any other questions about our project and program model, feel free to email us at News@justhaiti.org. |
JUST HAITI Coffee
Kafe Solidarite It is official! Our coffee name has changed from "Kafe Lespwa" to "Just Haiti Coffee" with the subtitle: Kafe Solidarite. The name change addresses several points:
- people already referred to our coffee by this name
- reflects our expansion to more coffee growing associations beyond KDB
- Solidarity between the purchaser and producer is the goal of Just Haiti
New labels are being printed and will be used on future orders.

It's in the BAG!
New bags were the topic of discussion at a recent board meeting. It was decided unanimously that changing to a higher quality bag not only improved the durability of the bag, but the vacuum sealed bag also offered purchasers a longer shelf life for Just Haiti Coffee.
Look for our new and improved coffee bags in your next shipment! |
