A 3D Printed World

Imagine that a small object or part of an appliance breaks in your home. Rather than going to the store to purchase a new part [or even another appliance] you can download the specifications to the broken part from the internet and send it to your own 3D printer to build the part and repair the item immediately. Such is the era that we are fast approaching. Just in the last few years, 3D Printers have become more and more affordable and will eventually be just another common household item.  Anything that your mind can imagine can be instantaneously created on this potential home appliance. Already everything from children's toys to even entire buildings are currently being 3D printed. It is a technology that is greatly impacting architects, the architectural industry and anyone who has a creative impulse. Many people will be able to bring to fruition those thoughts which to date has only been a bright idea. 

However, as a society, we must be cautious as 3D printers proliferate and become more ubiquitous, there is the possibility of easily creating just more pieces that will be thrown into landfills. Let's hope this is not the case and 3D printed products are made from material that can be recycled and reused as well.

Nevertheless, we are on the edge of a wonderful era that places the ability to be ultra creative in the hand of the architect, but also at the fingertips of everyone who has interest. So what will you build?
