My orchestra plays L'Arlesienne every
year at our holiday concert. A few years
ago, our percussionist was unable to play
so we hired a professional drummer. He
never came to rehearsal and did not know
the speed at which our conductor had us
play during rehearsals.
It's a zippy piece. I mean, it is FAST!
I have a number of flute solos that I play
with the drummer. There are a LOT of notes
to play. And play very quickly.
I had been doing some self-hypnosis to help
myself feel comfortable playing all the notes.
There is a technique I teach my HypnoGolf
students where the golfer, in trance, imagines
their perfect swing 1X in 10 seconds, then
2X in 10 seconds, 5X in 10 sec, 10X in 10 sec
and 30X in 10 sec.
The point is not to swing rapidly but to create
new neuronal pathways in the brain of the
desired outcome. (Your conscious mind can't
imagine swinging 30X in 10 sec, however your
unconscious mind can!)
I utilized that technique in my self-hypnosis
practice of my solo flute performance.
On the night of the concert, during that
challenging portion of L'Arlesienne, the
drummer led off the solo...except he played
it TWICE as fast as we had ever rehearsed it.
Well, guess who was able to tootle right
along with him?
I was actually laughing in my head while
my fingers were flying and hitting all-l-l-l-l
I LOVE the benefits of hypnosis!
