Brent Spence Bridge Study recommends new bridge, still no funding plan

The Kentucky Transportation Department (KYTC) says the consultants it hired to do a bridge study recommend building another bridge across the Ohio River to improve safety and travel on I-71 and I-75 between Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. This would be in addition to the Brent Spence Bridge. It also recommends a proposed eastern bypass for further study.

"This study confirms what many already suspected-a new bridge is needed, as well as improvements to I-71/75 to address the explosive economic growth along this important transportation corridor," says Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin who commissioned the report.

It's still unclear who will pay for the bridge, now estimated to cost $2.3 billion in current year dollars and $2.6 billion in future dollars, assuming the bridge opens in 2024.  Read More (WVXU)

Amtrak train was 50 mph over speed limit before crash

A high-speed Amtrak train that derailed near DuPont on Monday, killing three people and sending dozens to the hospital, was traveling 50 mph faster than it should have been at the spot where it derailed, according to federal transportation safety officials.

The National Transportation Safety Board's investigator in charge received a download of the event data recorder on the rear locomotor that indicated the train was traveling at about 80 mph in a 30 mph zone. Investigators obtained the recorder and cameras from the front locomotor and will compare data to make sure it matches.

Positive train control - technology that could have slowed or stopped the train automatically-  wasn't in use on this stretch of track, according to NTSB.  Read More (NBC5 Seattle)

States see Trump's infrastructure promise slipping away

Last December, a delegation from the U.S. Conference of Mayors attended a meeting on the 29th floor of Trump Tower, and left encouraged: President-elect Donald Trump had reiterated a  promise from the campaign trail that his new administration would use federal dollars to leverage $1 trillion in funding for everything from the nation's roads and bridges, to its transit systems and electrical grid.

In ensuing months, Vice President Mike Pence spoke at the mayors' annual conference, reiterating the White House's commitment to drumming up a massive investment. The administration  tapped two well-connected New York developers to run an Infrastructure Council, but it was later disbanded. White House summits and Trump's "Infrastructure Week"  came and went, but no concerted effort began.

In recent weeks, administration officials have told   industry groups and local government officials  that an infrastructure plan would be unveiled in January, with $200 billion in federal funding that will be parceled out in grants to state and local   governments that promise to match the investments with their own revenue, either in the form of taxes or private money.  Read More (CNN Money)

KYTC approves $85,780 for bicycle, pedestrian programs

KYTC Secretary Greg Thomas has approved the issuance of $85,780 in grants to improve bicycle and pedestrian initiatives. The grants are administered by the Kentucky Bicycle and Bikeway Commission through the Paula Nye Memorial Bicyclist and Pedestrian Education Grant program. The grants are awarded to organizations, groups and local governments for bicycling or pedestrian awareness, education and safety projects.

"Bicycling and pedestrian travel are important parts of Kentucky's transportation system," said Thomas. "The Transportation Cabinet is pleased to continue working with our local partners to improve these systems, as well as promoting walking and bicycling as safe and efficient modes of travel."

The grants are funded solely through the sale of Kentucky's "Share the Road" specialty license plates.  Read More and List of Grant Recipients (KYTC)
