2018: The Future o f Transportation

future_technology.jpg

The first newsletter of 2018 and with it we wa nted to reveal the theme for this year's events.  There has been so much discussion and attention paid to how our world, transportation specifically, will change in the coming 5, 10 and even 20 years.

Throughout this year each event will attempt to explore how our professional lives may change as well as how our user experience as participants in the world's transportation infrastructure.  We will be revealing additional information about the Spring Technical Meeting once the dates (likely late April) and presenters are finalized.  Some of the problems we currently deal with will be things of the past but as always with change, there will be new challenges that present themselves.  We want to ensure that all of KYSITE is ready for those changes and this year will be the year that we try and focus on how best to prepare.

If there are any topics or areas that YOU believe we, as transportation professionals, are not well enough prepared to handle, let us know!

Transportation in the News

Shuster pushes for fix of Highway Trust Fund

House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chair Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Pa., wants a long-term funding fix for the Highway Trust Fund. Some members of Congress have expressed skepticism about passing infrastructure legislation this year.

Bipartisan Bill Would Boost Kentucky's Gas Tax by 10 Cents

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A bipartisan proposal in the  Kentucky legislature would raise the gas tax by 10 cents per gallon and impose annual fees on hybrid and electric vehicles in an attempt to jump start the state's stagnant road fund.
Kentucky has a backlog of more than $1 billion in road paving projects, plus at least 1,000 bridges that need to be repaired or replaced. But the road fund the state uses to pay for those projects has not increased since 2014.
House Bill 609 by Republican Rep. Sal Santoro and Democratic Rep. John Sims would add an extra $391 million a year to the state's road fund. The bill is the result of a study committee formed last summer by former House Speaker Jeff Hoover.

Toyota AI Ventures boosts investment in self-driving startups

May Mobility, a startup developing self-driving shuttles for low-speed services in places such as central business districts and college campuses, is in the process of raising $11.5 million in a funding round led by Toyota AI Ventures. Toyota Motor's corporate venture arm is stepping up the pace of its investment in emerging technologies.

Professional Traffic Operations Engineer Refresher Course.

We have received some interest for the PTOE refresher course and we are planning on hosting something later this year.  There will be a $100 fee for attendance but this will be a great course for anyone wanting to get their PTOE certification.  The course will be 5 classes at around an hour for each class.  KYSITE also recommends this course for any new graduates as a way to supercharge your start in the Transportation field.

We don't yet have a venue or a date but we will be getting that information to everyone once we have enough participants.  Please email David Filiatreau at dfiliatreau@lexingtonky.gov if you would like to participate.
Place Making Projects

The "Lego Bridge" in Wuppertal, Germany brought new life to a decommissioned railway bridge that now serves as a pedestrian/bike path. The project was initiated by a local street artist and was carried out in collaboration with the city council and Lego.
