Happy Spring!
April is a busy month for KYSITE! We have the Southern District conference coming up April 8-11th in Mobile, Alabama. If you are going, come cheer on the UK student team at the Traffic Bowl on Monday.
Then, when we return, we will be hosting the Spring Technical Meeting on April 18th in Cincinnati, Ohio. We will continue our look into the future of transportation and what it means for transportation professionals.
More details on both events are in this newsletter.
We would love to see you there!

Transportation in the News
Uber's Fatal Self-Driving Crash
-
On March 18th, a 49-year-old woman was struck by a self-driving Uber vehicle in Tempe, Arizona. She was transported to the hospital, where she died. In the aftermath, Uber's self-driving program is hanging on by a thread, while the rest of the industry debates the speed in which these vehicles were being rushed to market. It is widely seen as the first person to be killed by an autonomous vehicle.
Miami Pedestrian Bridge Collapse
-
A lead engineer with one of the firms behind a pedestrian bridge that collapsed in south Florida, killing six people, left a voicemail with the Florida Department of Transportation about "some cracking" in the structure two days before the incident. Nobody listened to that voicemail until Friday. The cracking was seen after implementing a key change in the design and placement of one of its support towers.
Louisville Mid-American Trucking Show Highlights Need for Drivers
-
The latest survey on industry issues by the American Transportation Research Institute found that driver shortage was the top-ranked issue in 2017 for the first time since 2006. The industry faced a shortage of 50,000 drivers at the end of 2017, according to American Trucking Associations. A bill introduced in Congress last week might allow the age requirement to start at 18 instead of 21.

Professional Traffic Operations Engineer Refresher Course.
We have received some interest for the PTOE refresher course and we are planning on hosting something later this year. There will be a
$100 fee for attendance but this will be a great course for anyone wanting to get their PTOE certification. The course will be
5 classes at around an hour for each class. KYSITE also recommends this course for any
new graduates as a way to supercharge your start in the Transportation field.
We don't yet have a venue or a date but we will be getting that information to everyone once we have enough participants. Please email David Filiatreau at dfiliatreau@lexingtonky.gov if you would like to participate.

Place Making Projects
April showers bring May flowers: Portugal's "Umbrella Sky" might be useful here this time of year!
Built in 2011, the project creates a welcoming space for locals and tourists. The colorful umbrellas help shade the roadway during hot summer months, protect pedestrians from inclement weather, and add functional space for public outdoor workout classes and small events. The Umbrella Sky project has been duplicated in other areas across the globe.
