Kentucky Section ITE
July 2019
Hopefully all our KYSITE members are enjoying summer and have had the opportunity to take a break or vacation. Have you seen any interesting transportation designs or weird things out and about? If so send us the link or a picture! My son and I saw a t-rex riding an electric scooter when we were in Austin for the ITE International and Texas District Annual Meeting and Exhibit just a week ago (not the one pictured - the e-scooter was too fast to get a pic!).

The KYSITE board will be getting back to work and planning events for the fall so please keep an eye out for upcoming announcements on technical training opportunities and our annual meeting! If you have ideas on member needs please reach out to us! As always, thank you for your continued support and please don't hesitate to reach out if we can be of assistance.

2019 Joint International and Texas District Annual Meeting and Exhibit Recap

The Joint ITE International and Texas District Annual Meeting and Exhibit was held in Austin, Texas July 21 - 24, 2019. Kentucky was well-represented through participation of the UK Traffic Bowl Team in the ITE Collegiate Traffic Bowl Grand Championship. For those of you that hadn't heard - the team made it through the preliminary round and lost to the home state-favorite Texas in the finals.

Several Kentucky-section members were in attendance including Mark McIntosh and Lindsay Walker (pictured with her oldest son Ben). New to this year's meeting was a STEM 1/2 day program which included some transportation planning activities, introduction to signs and sign materials (looking at signs close up under a microscope) and a scavenger hunt in the Exhibit booth. All materials are available on ITE's website if you are in search of student outreach materials!

A special session was also held for conference attendees that featured a panel of six kids ages 10 - 14 and public agency professionals. The facilitator asked the kids questions about ITE and transportation topics such as Vision Zero, Smart Communities, Connected and Automated Vehicles, and Transportation and Health. Then the professionals were given the opportunity to react to what the kids had to say. All the kids did a great job in front of a filled room during a 1.5 hour session. We learned that they are more mindful of safety and would like better-defined areas to ride their bike and walk as well as were very forward thinking that it will take time for smart communities to build but they are committed to the investment to build better and smarter for their children.
Calling All Volunteers - Kentucky to Host 2022 SDITE Annual Meeting
It's been a few years since last it was the Kentucky section of the Southern District of ITE to host an annual meeting. We last took on this task in 2012 where we partnered with the Great Lakes District to host the meeting in Lexington, Kentucky.

This time it will be Louisville's turn to be the host city. Our co-chairs Brad Johnson (HMB) and Lindsay Walker (Kimley-Horn) have already kicked off the meeting planning process with a review of available hotel sites and possible ABD event venues. For those of you involved in the 2012 meeting it takes a lot of volunteers to put on an event of this size - typically between 400 - 600 attendees!

As we start to form our Local Arrangement Committees, please reach out to Brad and Lindsay if you are interested:
