The Changing Face of Transportation

Spring has Sprung!

While the spring meeting has come and gone there are still several other chances this year to participate in KYSITE.  We will soon start sending out information about this year's golf outing!  We had a good showing last year but unfortunately the weather did not cooperate, let's hope this year is fortuitous.  The KYSITE board has also begun planning for our fall technical meeting that will be held in Louisville; more information on this will be forthcoming in future newsletters.

If anyone has any ideas on potential activities that we could do as a section or even a way to get together socially please feel free to contact us!

2017 SDITE Annual Meeting Recap

The SDITE Annual Meeting was held last week in Columbia, South Carolina.  For those of you that missed it - the photos just don't do it justice.  It was an amazing meeting:

Highlights include:
-A new Kentucky flair for roll call during opening session.  Nothing like taking the mike from the SDITE president and expounding on the virtues of Kentucky!
-The Kentucky team showed up for the Traffic Bowl ready to compete!  While they did not make it to the final round they hung in there with some fierce competition.  Way to go Alex Mucci, Jacob Brashear, Shraddha Sagar, and Sneha Roy!
-A very memorable ABD  party with all kinds of 80s celebrities.  We danced the night away with Mighty McFly at the Columbia Art Museum.  Some sightings include Goose and Maverick from Top Gun, Bob Ross, and other cool 80s hip hop stars!
-Several presentations were made by our very own Kentucky members including:
Complete Streets / Multimodal D esign: Mike Sewell

The New HCM Sixth Edition: It's Not Your Father's HCM: Tom Creasey

Low Cost & Low Tech: Jeff Moore

-And the meeting wrapped up with two Kentucky section members winning awards!  Congratulations to Erin Lammers for winning the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Paper Award!  The title of her winning paper is "Applicability of Zipper Merge Versus Early Merge in Kentucky Work Zones".

And congratulations to Scott Walker for winning the Marble J. Hensley Outstanding Individual Activity Award.  For those of you that don't know Scott has contributed a substantial amount of his time to the Southern District increasing communication through the SDITE Connector  newsletter and spearheading the effort to re-vamp the website.  It was also an amazing night for Scott as it was his birthday (everybody sang) and he was sworn in as the newest SDITE President.

So if you have a minute - take time to send a note of congratulations to Erin and Scott!  We are very proud of them!

Company to begin testing "platooning: with autonomous trucking.

Peloton Technology will begin testing autonomous trucks in Ohio and will use a technique called platooning, where one vehicle is 50 feet behind another vehicle. Platooning helps reduce fuel consumption, and the trucks are equipped with collision avoidance systems to reduce the chance of an accident.
