Transportation in the News

World's Longest Sea-Crossing Bridge Opens in China

A $20-billion bridge connecting Hong Kong and Macau to the mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai opened on October 24th. The bridge spans 34 miles and consists  of a series of three  cable-stayed bridges viaducts undersea tunnels  and four  artificial islands .
The mega-structure took almost 8 years to build and is designed to last 120 years; it can withstand typhoon-force winds of up to 340km an hour and a magnitude 8 earthquake. The bridge will decrease commute time between the two cities from 3+ hours to just 30 minutes, but the closer connection may have some unwanted political implications as well.

Phoenix, Arizona will be home to a new, sprawling facility solely dedicated to researching autonomous vehicles. Gov. Doug Ducey signed an executive order Thursday creating the newly minted Institute for Automated Mobility. The proposed hub will focus on the technology and its integration into the real world. Multiple state agencies, Arizona's three major public universities and tech giant Intel are partnering on the project.

Ride sharing companies Uber and Lyft are offering voters free and discounted rides to the polls to ensure that transportation issues are not a barrier to voting.  Both companies have issued statements that this initiative is non partisan, just an effort to help get people out to vote. If you or someone you know need help getting to the polls, please take this opportunity!
Place Making Projects

A New York City plaza has been transformed into a pedestrian-friendly public space. This was part of the Plaza Program, a city-wide effort to create open space in traffic-heavy areas. The project at this location improved walkability, improved access to public transit, and enhanced safety.
