August is upon us and for some of us we are sad that school will be starting (groan) or happy (yay!) because that means cooler weather and the return of football!   This month also brings with it the ITE Annual Meeting and Exhibit.  For those of you travelling north here are some fun facts about Minneapolis that will make you sound very knowledgeable.  For everyone else - maybe these will come up in trivia someday.  #themoreyouknow

Fun facts about Minneapolis:

-We all know Minnesota is famous for its cold winters.  The way the residents of Minneapolis combat this is a massive indoor pedestrian walkway system that links many of its downtown buildings.  At 69 blocks and seven miles, it's the longest continuous skyway system in the world.

-In 2012, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis hosted the world's first Internet Cat Video Festival.  An estimated 10,000 people showed up for the event.

-Minneapolis and St.Paul are giving cities with nearly 40% of adults devoting some of their free time to volunteer work.

-Before F. Scott Fitzgerald hobnobbed around Paris with Hemingway or became an East Coast city slicker, he spent his adolescent years in St. Paul. When Fitzgerald was a young man, his future wife, Zelda Sayre, broke off their engagement. To win her back, Fitzgerald moved back into his parent's house in St. Paul, where he worked on the manuscript that would someday be known as This Side of Paradise.  The novel was a bestseller and Zelda returned to his side.

Have a great August and stay tuned as we unveil upcoming KYSITE Fall events - the Fall Technical Meeting and KYSITE Annual Meeting!

KYSITE Golf Outing

Thank you to everyone who participated in the KYSITE Scholarship Golf Outing at Weissinger Hills in Shelbyville. The weather was perfect for our 30 golfers to play and socialize.

Through the support our individual and corporate partners, we were able to raise more than $3,600 for our scholarship fund.

Special thanks to our premium event sponsors, Diane B. Zimmerman Traffic Engineering and Traffic Control Products, for their support.

Congratulations to the winning foursome from the Davis H. Elliot Company (Rusty Hiler, Jim Kemper, Steve Vance, and Jake Green) with a score of 64 (-8). Jim also was the winner of the longest drive contest.

Transportation in the News

Uber driver was streaming Hulu show just before self-driving car crash: Police report -
  • Police said the crash was "deemed entirely avoidable" if the driver had been paying attention.
  • According to the report, the driver could face charges of vehicle manslaughter.
  • The Uber car was in autonomous mode at the time of the crash.
This begs the question... If people have a hard enough time paying attention to the road when they are in control of the vehicle, do we expect them to pay attention when the car is driving itself?

Trump rebuild America program sends $67 million to remake I-75 in Boone County -
Northern Kentucky will get $67.4 million from the federal government to address traffic problems on Interstate 75.

No, it's not for the Brent Spence Bridge, that'll require $2.5 billion, but a little further south in Boone County.

Kentucky was given the money to rebuild two I-75/I-71 interchanges in Boone County as part of President Donald Trump's pledge to rebuild America's infrastructure.

Place Making Projects

A project close to home! Owensboro's place-making initiative began in 2007 and has quickly transformed the downtown and waterfront of this western Kentucky city. The project's purpose was to encourage economic growth. To this end, engineers and planners created pedestrian-focused streets, bicycle paths, a public plaza, a new hotel and events center, and attractive living spaces. They have already seen an increase in commerce due to several citizens and businesses relocating to the new urban center.
