The Changing Face of Transportation

Happy New Year!

The KYSITE Board has already had our kick-off meeting and we're excited to serve you in 2017 by providing great opportunities for continuing education, networking, and advancing the field of transportation engineering.

We've got some great webinars coming up and are also planning a joint spring meeting with the Ohio Section of ITE. Read on to find out about all of the upcoming events.

As always, let us know if there is anything we can do for you!

- KYSITE Officers
KYSITE Konnecting

Put down your phones, get off social media, shut down your computer and come out to interact with REAL LIVE PEOPLE! We are beginning a series of social networking opportunities with KYSITE members, friends of KYSITE and people who simply like to talk traffic engineering and transportation!

Join us for our first get-together on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at West Sixth Brewing (501 W Sixth Street, Lexington, KY 40508) at 5:00 PM. To help us gauge interest level and who might attend, please click here to let us know if you plan to attend!

All of our gatherings will not only be liquids on Thursday nights once a month. We are hoping to do a variety of activities throughout the year, generally sticking to the fourth Thursday at 5:00 PM OR fourth Friday at 7:30 AM depending on the activity.
  • The March gathering will be morning doughnuts!
  • Some other ideas include: Blue Stallion, Orange Leaf / Crank and Boom, Laser Tag, Mini-Golf and more!
Our goal is to network, foster collaboration, and create some new energy in KYSITE! For each of these gatherings we will also be looking to invite other groups to learn new perspectives such as LFUCG, KSPE, APA, and more!

If you have an idea for a location or group to invite, please feel free to contact Lindsay Walker

We are also looking for someone to lead the charge in other cities (Louisville? Covington?). If interested, please let us know!

Transportation in the News

Trump Team Compiles Infrastructure Priority List

President Donald Trump's team has compiled a list of about 50 infrastructure projects nationwide, totaling at least $137.5 billion, as the new White House tries to determine its investment priorities, according to documents obtained by McClatchy's Kansas City Star and The News Tribune.

The preliminary list, provided to the National Governor's Association by the Trump transition team, offers a first glimpse at which projects around the country might get funding if Trump follows through on his campaign promise to renew America's crumbling highways, airports, dams and bridges. The governor's association shared that list with state officials in December. The group told the officials the projects on that list were "already being vetted."

Kentucky has one project listed - the Brent Spence Bridge Project in Northern Kentucky and Southern Ohio.

Traffic Increasing on Ohio River toll bridges, RiverLink says

Buoyed by increased traffic on the Kennedy Bridge, crossings on the RiverLink network of toll bridges rose slightly during the second full week of tolling, according to figures released Monday (Jan. 16).

About 400,000 vehicles used the three pay-to-cross bridges - the Interstate 65 Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln spans, and the upriver Lewis and Clark Bridge - between January 9 and January 13, the data show. That compares with 395,830 during the same period the previous week, which included a federal holiday and one day of inclement weather.

Overall, the bridges saw a 1 percent increase in traffic.

The average daily traffic on the three toll bridges was 79,952. Officials have projected 110,000 crossings each day on the bridges, which rely on tolls of $2 to $12 per crossings to pay off the construction bonds for the Ohio River Bridges Project.

Elaine Chao Sails Through Senate Committee

The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation voted unanimously to approve Elaine Chao's nomination as transportation secretary Tuesday (Jan. 24), pushing the former labor secretary and Washington insider closer to a new official role shaping one of President Trump's signature initiatives.

Chao's nomination will now move to the full Senate, but a hearing has not yet been scheduled.
Trump pledged a big infrastructure boost during his campaign, and Chao's supporters say that she is well positioned to help turn those promises into reality.

But key issues - including how much would be spent on what, and how it would be paid for - remain uncertain. Trump talked of a $1 trillion effort, which his advisers said would include a rush of private investment lured by tax breaks, although economists have questioned those assumptions.

This weeks crosswalk is a bit wild, with the traditional white lines being painted as zebra stripes! Thanks for Vanessa Nghiem for passing these along!
