EMBRACING COMMUNITY

Todah Rabah to the Grade 8 families who joined us for Kabbalat Shabbat! It was a true pleasure to meet the families of the Class of 2028 and share in the joy of welcoming the Shabbat together, continuing a cherished King David tradition. The warmth and spirit of community felt during this special moment set a beautiful tone for the year ahead.

A special thanks to our dedicated faculty and staff for their heartfelt efforts in welcoming our newest members, sharing not only their passion for King David but also their commitment to fostering a meaningful and inclusive Jewish experience for all. We look forward to an exciting and fulfilling journey together!

STUDENTS LEARN TO TAKE ACTION

As the election cycle heats up, so does our student engagement! This week, Grades 10 and 11 participated in political volunteer training, led by CJPAC (Canadian Jewish Political Affairs Committee). A multi-partisan Jewish community panel of campaign experts, along with a representative from CIJA, guided the students through essential campaign tasks, including door-knocking, distributing literature, and phone banking — all key components in helping political candidates get elected.

As a follow-up, students were assigned “homework” to research provincial parties. The next step: boots on the ground! On Tuesday, October 1, students will be paired with the party of their choice and head into local ridings to door-knock and phone bank. This exciting initiative marks King David High School as the first Jewish school in the country to undertake such a project. Not a bad way to spend a school day!

From left to right: Kara Mintzberg (Director, B.C. Region - CJPAC), Alysa Huppler-Poliak (Constituency Advisor to MLA and Speaker of the House Raj Chouhan and a representative from Get Out The Vote), Jaime Stein (Jewish Community Volunteer), David Decolongon (Associate Director, Policy and Communications, Pacific Region - CIJA), Ryan Braude (Senior Communications Officer, Legislative Assembly of British Columbia - Official Opposition Caucus), and Jill Cordes (Administrative & Program Coordinator, British Columbia - CJPAC)

POST-SECONDARY PRESENTATIONS HAVE BEGUN!

This week, our senior students engaged in an insightful presentation from an expert advisor at Ivey University, exploring how Ivey fosters a dynamic learning environment. They had the opportunity to ask questions about how to craft compelling applications and what it takes to thrive in a university setting. As students prepare for the next chapter beyond high school, they face both exciting possibilities and greater responsibilities. At King David, we are dedicated to guiding students in exploring all their options, ensuring they make informed choices that align with their future goals and aspirations.

KING DAVID TOP CHEFS - COMMITMENT AND TEAMWORK

Our heartfelt thanks go to Ms. Nurick and the students from Chesed Club, Foods Class, and the Morah Naim's Service students for their incredible efforts in preparing over 300 challah buns for the school's Kabbalat Shabbat assembly. This was especially significant as it marked the first Kabbalat Shabbat of the school year. Their hard work, dedication, and attention to detail made the event truly memorable, and all of the students thoroughly enjoyed the delicious challah. Thank you to the group for making this Shabbat experience even more meaningful with their commitment and teamwork.

FUN, FRIENDSHIP AND REFLECTION OUTDOORS

Our Grade 8 students, equipped with sleeping bags, warm clothing, and flashlights, embarked on an exciting overnight retreat to Sole Camp on Thursday, despite the wind and rain. The trip featured a variety of classic summer camp activities, including archery, low ropes, shelter building, and games however, there was a Plan B in case of excessive rain!

Students also enjoyed special evening programs such as bonfires, karaoke, and games. Beyond the fun and adventure, the retreat provided time for reflection on the upcoming High Holidays and an opportunity to bond with peers and the newly arrived Shinshiniot from Israel. These retreats serve as a meaningful way for students to strengthen their connections, build friendships, and enjoy a fun outdoor experience.

Hakochavim Shelanu is a feature dedicated to highlighting incredible students within our school community. We will shine a light on one student whose accomplishments, whether academic, athletic, service, or personal, inspire us all. This is a space to celebrate the diverse talents and achievements of our students, recognizing those who go above and beyond.

Our first featured star this year is Sharon Tanne, a Grade 11 student whose drive and passion are evident both in and out of school. Sharon is an integral member of the Senior Volleyball Team, bringing leadership and energy to every game. She also recently completed her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, showcasing her commitment to self-improvement, adventure, and community service.

Beyond sports, Sharon finds time to share her love for athletics, teaching young children gymnastics at the Jewish Community Centre. Her ability to balance academics, athletics, and mentoring is truly impressive.

Sharon, you are a shining example of what it means to be a star at our school. We can't wait to see what you achieve next!
