LIONS ROAR TO HISTORIC FINISH!

The King David High School Senior Girls' Basketball team made history with a top-10 finish at the BC School Sports Girls Basketball 1A Provincial Tournament, held at the Langley Events Centre from February 26 to March 1, 2025.

In their first provincial appearance since 2022, the Lions showcased resilience and skill, winning two of three games. They narrowly lost their opener to the Bulkley Valley Christian Royals (42-35) but rebounded with thrilling victories over John Knox Secondary (38-36) and Vancouver Christian School (58-55), securing their place among the province’s elite.

Head Coach Rachel Bugis expressed pride in the team’s growth, highlighting their journey from building confidence to competing at the highest level. Senior player Danielle Kimel, in her first year with the squad, emphasized the importance of mental fortitude, saying, "Basketball is such a team sport. You have to rely on your teammates and not let mistakes define you."

As the Lions celebrate their historic season, Coach Rachel Bugis reflected on what truly matters: "While these victories are incredible, I am most proud of the growth I've seen in each of you, not just as players, but as people."

This achievement marks the best-ever performance by a King David senior girls' basketball team. Team Captain Romy Alterman hopes their success inspires future players: "There's no harm in trying. Being part of a team like this is an unmatched experience, and I want to see girls’ sports thrive at King David."

The King David community celebrates a team that has proven they can compete with the best in B.C., paving the way for future success.

THE UNSUNG HEROES: OUR INCREDIBLE CUSTODIANS!

L-R: Jess Sabado, Noni Mendoza, and Jeffrey Caspillo

At King David, we take pride in our clean, organized, and welcoming environment. But behind the scenes, ensuring our school remains in top shape every single day, is a team of dedicated individuals whose work often goes unnoticed. Our custodians, Jess Sabado (Building Manager), Noni Mendoza, and Jeffrey Caspillo, are the backbone of our school’s daily operations, working tirelessly to keep every hallway, classroom, and common space spotless.

Jess, Noni, and Jeffrey do so much more than clean. They create a space where students and staff can focus on learning, free from clutter and distraction. Whether it's setting up for events, ensuring safety standards are met, or responding to unexpected messes with efficiency and a smile, their hard work is felt in every corner of the school.

Their dedication goes beyond maintenance; they are an integral part of our King David community. Always greeting students and staff with warmth and kindness, they exemplify the King David values of respect, diligence, and generosity.

So next time you walk through the halls of King David, take a moment to appreciate their phenomenal work. A simple "thank you" goes a long way in recognizing the invaluable contributions of these unsung heroes who make our school feel like home.

DEBATING ECONOMICS

On Wednesday, our Grade 12 Economic Theory class participated in a dynamic seminar exploring Neoclassical and Keynesian economics. They discussed key themes such as individual choices vs. macro trends, government intervention, drivers of growth, recession strategies, and historical policy examples. Students also debated rational decision-making and price dynamics. Through active participation, students honed their critical thinking skills and deepened their understanding of these economic theories. This seminar provided an opportunity for students to engage in a stimulating environment while discussing real-world issues, preparing them for future academic and professional challenges.

THE PURIM REVERSAL CHALLENGE: VE-NAHAFOKH HU

This year, students of all grades took part in an exciting Purim Escape Room! Designed to challenge their knowledge of Purim in a fun and engaging way, the activity encouraged critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Working in groups, students tackled challenge questions and puzzles that reinforced key Purim concepts, including ve-nahafokh hu (the theme of reversals), the role of lottery and chance, the idea of hidden miracles, and the ongoing struggle against Amalek. They explored the threats to Jewish survival in exile, deepened their understanding of the Megillah’s plot, characters, and themes, and reflected on how joy and silliness increase in Adar (mi-she-nikhnas Adar marbim be-simchah).

The Purim spirit was alive and well as students raced to uncover the hidden meanings in the story, proving that—just like in the days of Esther and Mordechai—things aren’t always what they seem!

Here are the the tasks given by the Rabbi, can you guess the answers?

ENGAGING IN GLOBAL DIPLOMACY AT JCYMUN 2025

Students who attended the Jewish Canadian Youth Model United Nations (JCYMUN) described it as an intellectually stimulating and transformative experience.

This year, experienced delegates Zev Baum Singer (Republic of Singapore, WHO) and Max Howitt (Lyman L. Lemnitzer, Crisis Committee) took on challenging roles. First-time delegates tackled important global issues. Romy Alterman (Peru) and Callie Dodek (Yemen) participated in UNESCO, addressing Population Control and Clean Water/Sanitation. Callie helped draft an adopted resolution. Lev Shustik (Pakistan) and Levi Moskovitz (Switzerland) joined UNICEF, focusing on child trafficking and children in conflict. Lev co-authored a resolution. Eva Guez (Guinea) represented the African Union, tackling conflicts in the “Coup Belt” and wildlife endangerment.

All students worked hard, gaining insight into diplomacy while networking with Jewish peers from across North and South America. With 230 participants, JCYMUN continues to foster debate, public speaking, and a passion for global affairs in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

DIGGING INTO THE WORLD OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

Students had an incredible experience exploring the Britannia Copper Mine, where they saw their mining projects come to life. After analyzing mining data and developing solutions—whether technical, environmental, or community-focused—this visit provided a firsthand look at how these challenges and innovations unfold in the real world.

Experiential learning plays a crucial role in reinforcing knowledge and making meaningful connections. By immersing themselves in the mining environment, students gained a deeper appreciation for how resource extraction impacts our daily lives, from generating electricity to advancing medical and technological innovations. They also observed how technological advancements have made mining safer and more environmentally responsible, highlighting the ongoing progress toward more sustainable practices.

EXPLORING PARTICLE ENERGY

In Science class, Grade 8 students have been developing essential skills in experimental design, data analysis, and the proper use of scientific equipment. Through hands-on investigations, they explored how adding heat increases the average kinetic energy of particles.

Using thermometers and careful measurement techniques, they collected and analyzed data to observe temperature changes and identify patterns.

This experience not only reinforced their understanding of the kinetic molecular theory but also helped them build confidence in conducting experiments.

David Kaye, King David Alumnus (Class of 2006), is hosting a dynamic 3-day intensive focused on embodying character through the powerful techniques of Meisner and Chekhov. Whether you’re looking to refine your craft or break through creative blocks, this intensive will give you the tools to bring authenticity and depth to every performance.
