A couple years ago, my husband and I were in a country store in rural central New York. I spotted a little plaque that read, “Give it to God and go to sleep.” As someone skilled in the art of worrying, the concept struck me as empowering – being able to bring on the peace of sleep by simply handing my concerns over to God. On nights when the busy-ness of the day keeps me from quieting my mind in bed, I try to do just that.

In August, LHM Foundation’s Coordinator of Spiritual Care, Kris Bouslough, led a discussion group for our Horizons program participants, the topic of which was “Worry.” (He warmed us up for the chat by covering Grace and Forgiveness in June and July.) During the conversation, Kris quoted 1 Peter 5:7, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because he cares for you.” I enjoyed hearing participants reflect on that biblical version of the knickknack I saw up in central NY.

The men, women and children of our Horizons program have experienced homelessness, food insecurity, violence, illness, months or years of the chaos brought on by housing insecurity, and other traumas specific to their situations. They have shared that when they first enter their private unit in our facility after weeks, months or years of chaos, it can be hard to quiet their mind and feel at peace. Our wish for them on that first night is that they, too, can give their worries to God and go to sleep.

Join us for an evening celebrating the work of LHM Foundation and the support of our donors, volunteers and community partners!

The Country Club of Harrisburg will provide a scenic backdrop for Be a Beacon: A Night to Benefit LHM Foundation, our first annual fundraising dinner, on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026.

LHM Foundation’s Horizons transitional housing program currently serves as home for 38 people, including 17 children. Our halls were abuzz with giggles (and occasional excited shouts!) last week, as many of them returned to school.

Through the Horizons program, we look for opportunities to build relationships between participants and the community resources that will provide support long after they leave our program. We recently enjoyed a (non-emergency!) visit from our local police and fire departments. The children in our Horizons program had the chance to meet and make positive connections with the men and women who help keep our community safe. The bonus? They also got an up-close look at the emergency vehicles!

2025 ANNUAL ASSESSMENT ON HOMELESSNESS (HUD)

Homelessness amongst children and young adults is on the rise in Dauphin County. This trend is reflected in the significant number of unhoused families with children referred to LHM Foundation’s Horizons transitional housing program.

From 2024 to 2025 (the most recent data available), the number of people under the age of 25 experiencing homelessness in Dauphin County increased by nearly 7%, despite a 6.4% decrease statewide. Among those ages 18-24, homelessness in Dauphin County increased by 17.6%.

Of those under the age of 25 experiencing homelessness in Dauphin County, nearly 27% were unaccompanied youth, meaning they were not part of a family unit. This figure is materially higher than Pennsylvania's statewide percentage of unaccompanied youth (18%).

Participants in LHM Foundation’s Horizons transitional housing program are responsible for cleaning their residential unit, washing their linens and towels, and caring for their personal hygiene. Studies show that maintaining good hygiene positively influences one’s mood, interactions with others, self-confidence, and physical and emotional well-being. At the same time, the investment in maintaining clean surroundings leads to a positive sense of “place,” which makes people feel invested in their home.

Local businesses and other organizations play an important role in supporting our ability to make cleaning and personal care items available to participants, which is particularly important as they work to grow their financial resources. In August, two of our partners – Alera Group and LHM Physical Therapy Institute – held impressive donation drives to benefit LHM Foundation. They amassed a stunning amount of toilet paper, paper towels, facial tissue, kitchen trash bags, laundry pods and more!

BETH ZANGLE

Meet Beth!

Beth Zangle, a retired teacher’s aide in the Camp Hill School District, has been married to her husband Rich for 40 years. Together, they have four children and ten grandchildren! Beth cherishes spending time with her grandchildren, and in the summers the entire family enjoys being together at Lake Chautauqua in upstate New York.

From a young age, Beth’s parents instilled in her the importance of giving back to others. As a result, Beth has always had a passion for volunteer work.

Expressing how much she enjoys being a member of the Horizons Beam Teams, Beth says “It has been amazing to be given the opportunity to volunteer with a community of professionals who strongly believe in helping others who are experiencing hardships while trying to get back into permanent housing for themselves and their families.”

Spot a lighthouse on your travels? Share it with us!

Although our work is depicted by the beam emanating from a lighthouse’s lamp, the entire lighthouse holds a special place in our hearts! Friend of LHM Foundation, Dan Alex, shared this beautiful photo of Bass Harbor Head Light Station in Maine’s Acadia National Park from his summer travels.

The Bass Harbor Head Light Station is famous indeed, having appeared on the “America the Beautiful” quarter in 2012 and the National Park Service’s centennial postage stamp in 2016! It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Built in 1858 with funding appropriated by Congress, Bass Harbor Head Light Station was constructed to guide mariners entering Bass Harbor and Blue Hill Bay, two of the most important working harbors on Mount Desert Island, Maine. The Station includes a 37-foot tall lighthouse (including the lightning rod), a keeper’s dwelling, a bell house, an oil house, and even a barn! The lighthouse was not fully automated until 1974. Today, it remains one of Maine’s most iconic lighthouses, known for its dramatic cliffside setting and sweeping views of the area’s outer islands.
