JULY 2025

Dear Friends,

As you might have seen in recent press reports, there is a well-established homeless encampment here in Harrisburg, often referred to as Tent City. In the coming weeks, the 80-120 people who live there need to vacate the encampment, because it is going to serve as a staging area for a significant highway construction project. Local officials and nonprofit organizations are exploring ways to address the situation, including by moving many of the Tent City residents to a 3-acre parcel about a mile away.

While Harrisburg addresses this daunting challenge, rates of homelessness grew more than 18% nationally from 2023 to 2024, with families with children seeing a more than 39% increase. In other words, the issues playing out locally are being replicated across the country with the number of unhoused individuals and families increasing steadily.

In her book Bossypants, comedian Tina Fey wrote, “Whatever the problem, be part of the solution. Don’t just sit around raising questions and pointing out obstacles.”

LHM Foundation will be part of the solution for the crisis of homelessness by working with the “acutely unhoused” – those on the brink of or new to being unhoused – providing support before they slip into the growing ranks of those experiencing long-term homelessness. Beginning in January 2026, the Horizons transitional housing program will address homelessness at its root causes on an individualized basis, through case management, supportive services and community resources delivered in LHM Foundation's residential setting.

With January 2026 fast approaching, I hope you’ll join us as we get busy being part of the solution!

With gratitude,

Amy

LHM Foundation will begin welcoming individuals and families into our Horizons transitional housing program in January 2026. We anticipate enrolling ten program participants in January, four of whom will be accompanied by family members.

We're incredibly grateful to the supporters who have stepped in to sponsor 19 residential units at our family care facility. We're seeking sponsors for all 58 units, to light up the building with hope and opportunity before ringing in the New Year! Sponsorships are available for support at the individual ($10,000) and family ($25,000) levels. With 39 rooms to go, you can help light up Horizons!

DID YOU KNOW?

DEFINITIONS OF HOMELESSNESS

You hear it on the news: "Homelessness in on the rise." You think it when you pass a man asking for change on the street: "He must be homeless." You might have a family worrying about: "I can't make rent this month. I'm going to be homeless." But what does the word really mean?

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development defines homelessness within four broad categories. We'll keep the explanation brief here, but visit HUD's website for more detail.

  • Category 1 (Literally Homeless) includes individuals and families who lack a "fixed, regular and adequate" nighttime residence, meaning they spend their night in a place not meant for habitation (e.g., abandoned building), or in a shelter, transitional housing facility, or motel paid for by a charitable organization or governmental program.
  • Category 2 (Imminent Risk of Homelessness) includes individuals and families who will lose their primary nighttime residence within 14 days and lack the resources or support networks to obtain other permanent housing.
  • Category 3 (Homeless Under Other Federal Statutes) includes families who do not otherwise qualify as homeless, but have not had a legal interest in permanent housing during the past 60 days, and can be expected to continue in such status for an extended period due to special needs or barriers.
  • Category 4 (Attempting to Flee Domestic Violence) includes any individuals and families who are attempting to flee domestic violence, have no other residence, and lack the resources or support to obtain other permanent housing.

Spot a lighthouse on your travels? Share it with us!

Although our work is depicted by the beam emanating from a lighthouse's lamp, the entire lighthouse still holds a special place in our hearts! Janice, a Beam Team volunteer and friend of LHM Foundation, spotted this beauty in her recent travels to Ponce Inlet, Florida.

The Ponce de Leon Lighthouse (formerly the Mosquito Inlet Lighthouse) was completed in 1887, at a total cost of nearly $200,000! The first lighthouse keeper, William Rowlinski, was paid $720 per year, plus a quarterly allotment of food supplies – salt pork and beef, flour, brown sugar, coffee, tea, rice, and beans or peas.

Send your lighthouse photos to info@lhm-foundation.org. Include the location and any information you wish to share!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

ANNA HONG

Meet Anna! Anna is a Patient Care Coordinator at LHM Physical Therapy Institute, but she’s also a regular LHM Foundation Beam Team volunteer. Anna helps to serve lunches at a local shelter and pack boxes for areas struck by disaster. She’s also helping to ready the future home of our Horizons transitional housing program for its January 2026 opening!

“I really enjoy volunteering and being part of the LHM Foundation Beam Teams,” Anna says. “There’s always laughter and a great sense of connection. At the same time, we’re doing something that truly matters, and being part of that bigger purpose makes it all incredibly rewarding. Sometimes it’s just the hope that a small gesture can ease someone’s burden.”

Anna wants those considering joining the Beam Teams to know, “Everyone starts somewhere – and this is a great place to begin. You’ll find support, community and a chance to do something that truly matters.

Thank you, Anna! You truly are a bright light at LHM Foundation!
