SEPTEMBER 2025

Dear Friends,

In the Volunteer Spotlight section of this month’s newsletter, Amy Jama mentions the importance and impact of small acts of kindness. Reading Amy’s words led me to reflect on a poem that has come to mean a lot to me, and I wanted to share it with you. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Small Kindnesses

Danusha Laméris

I’ve been thinking about the way, when you walk

down a crowded aisle, people pull in their legs

to let you by. Or how strangers still say “bless you”

when someone sneezes, a leftover

from the Bubonic plague. “Don’t die,” we are saying.

And sometimes, when you spill lemons

from your grocery bag, someone else will help you

pick them up. Mostly, we don’t want to harm each other.

We want to be handed our cup of coffee hot,

and to say thank you to the person handing it. To smile

at them and for them to smile back. For the waitress

to call us honey when she sets down the bowl of clam chowder,

and for the driver in the red pick-up truck to let us pass.

We have so little of each other, now. So far

from tribe and fire. Only these brief moments of exchange.

What if they are the true dwelling of the holy, these

fleeting temples we make together when we say, “Here,

have my seat,” “Go ahead — you first,” “I like your hat.”

With gratitude,

Amy

The first days of fall have been abuzz with activity at LHM Foundation!

In early September, LHM Foundation was blessed to be one of the many local nonprofit organizations benefiting from the United Way of the Capital Region’s Day of Caring. Wonderful volunteers from Boyer & Ritter, LLC and Truist Bank brought light and laughter as they painted lines in our parking lots, weeded and trimmed our grounds, and more! We are grateful to all who participated in this effort to ensure our campus is a welcoming place for program participants to call home.

Just a week after the visit from Day of Caring volunteers, LHM Foundation officially moved its administrative offices to the Butler Street home of the Horizons transitional housing program! Being on-site each day will allow the Foundation’s administrative team to be part of the community we’re building, working side-by-side with program staff, volunteers and participants.

LHM Foundation will be welcoming its first Horizons participants in only 102 days!

As we prepare for January, we are seeking Monthly Lightkeepers to help support the daily expenses of the Horizons program, creating a well of community support for those in need working toward brighter futures. Monthly Lightkeepers’ recurring gifts will help LHM Foundation provide daily program essentials, including:

  • Food for nourishing meals.
  • Case management, dining services and other staff central to participant success.
  • Everyday needs, from linens to cleaning supplies to transportation and beyond.
  • Water, electric, gas and other utilities. Your gift not only shines a light – it literally helps keep the lights on!

Help make the Horizons program a beacon of hope and possibility that shines for years to come. Become a Monthly Lightkeeper by visiting www.lhm-foundation.org/donate to make your recurring gift. A generous donor continues to match every gift dollar-for-dollar, up to $3 million!

Mention LHM Foundation or our unique code (50322) when donating clothes at any CommunityAid store. LHM Foundation gets paid for every pound donated!

DID YOU KNOW?

SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Commentary about those experiencing homelessness often highlights the incidence of substance abuse amongst that population alone, rather than in comparison with the incidence amongst those with stable housing. Doing so can result in overgeneralizations and the perpetuation of misconceptions, risking the dehumanization of the unhoused.

Although accurate data on the coexistence of homelessness and addiction can be difficult to determine, the American Addiction Centers reports that approximately 33% of those experiencing homelessness have substance use problems involving drugs and/or alcohol. According to the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics, 25% of all those in the United States who are 12 and over have used illegal drugs or misused prescription drugs in the last year. While not a direct apples-to-apples comparison, this information certainly suggests that although the incidence of substance abuse is higher amongst those experiencing homelessness than amongst the housing secure, it is widespread among both housed and unhoused populations.

It is important to also consider the nuances behind the numbers. In many instances, substance abuse results from the stress of homelessness, with those experiencing homelessness beginning to use drugs or alcohol as a way of coping with the pressures of being unhoused. At the same time, there may be more barriers for those individuals to stop using substances, without ready access to treatment or a strong support network, and the need to prioritize finding food and shelter over other aspects of their well-being.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

AMY JAMA

Meet Amy!

Amy Jama is the Executive Vice President of Compliance and Clinical Services at LHM Physical Therapy Institute. She also serves as the Vice President of Auxiliary Services for LHM Foundation, overseeing dining services and facilities and grounds. Even with that busy schedule, Amy finds time to volunteer with LHM Foundation’s community-based Beam Teams!

“Growing up, my parents served their communities through various volunteer activities and groups. Watching them helped inspire me to serve. I was able to observe how seemingly small acts of kindness and giving can have a huge impact on a person and in a community.” Amy adds, “Now, I want to inspire my own children to serve through my example.”

Volunteering with LHM Foundation helps Amy feel connected to her community. “I feel happier, more inspired, and fulfilled when I get to directly impact the lives of others,” she says. “I think that I am a better mother, spouse, friend, coworker and person when I am focusing my attention outward, rather than inward. I am thankful that LHM Foundation provides me with the opportunity to serve others.”

Thank you, Amy! You truly are a bright light at LHM Foundation!
