Footsteps of La Crosse Historic Walking Tour: Downtown La Crosse

The roughly five-block La Crosse Commercial Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 and contains 110 buildings, of which 96 are considered contributing to the historic architectural character of the district. This tour leads you to approximately 15 sites and follows the history of the city from the boomtown riverboat days through the Roaring '20s through the evolution of building styles and details. Serve, Preserve, Share 

     

National History Day @ La Crosse Public Library featuring La Crosse Area Middle School Students 

National History Day projects will be on display on the first floor at the La Crosse Public Library Main location during the month of May. This year's theme is Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events.

 

La Crosse Area Middle School students toured the library and gathered research for their projects earlier in the year. Visit the displays to see the results of their research, and to see who the winners are. Projects include exhibits, historical papers, documentaries, and websites.

 

A reception will be held Sunday, May 19 at 1:30 to announce the winners of the Washburn Awards.

 

Mark My Words Again: Artists Respond to Short Poems 

 

The Pump House Regional Arts Center and the La Crosse Public Library invite submissions for an upcoming exhibition: Mark my Words Again. This exhibit will showcase short poetry and the art it inspires. During the exhibition, the poetry and the art created in response to it will be displayed side by side.

The culmination of this project will be a gala reception on Friday, October 18, 2013. At this event, poets will read their work in front of projected images of the connected art, and $800 in prizes will be awarded: * 5 "Best Connection" prizes of $100 each (shared $50 to artist and $50 to poet) * 3 "Best Poem" prizes of $50 each * 3 "Best Art" prizes of $50 each.
 
Submit two unpublished SHORT poems for consideration. All genres will be considered. Use 12 point font and save your poems for uploading as individual .pdf or .doc files. Do not include your name as part of the file name.  Deadline for submissions is May 1, 2013Learn more...
 
The exhibit will come from the Pump House to the gallery at La Crosse Public Library after the Gala and through November, 2013.
