President's Message

A thriving democracy is critical if the United States is to remain a true democracy "of and for the people." Regardless of your thoughts and feelings about the most recent election, work must continue on protecting the right to vote, protecting the air we breathe and the waters that nourish us.

Please consider becoming more active in the work being done by the League of Women Voters of Berrien and Cass Counties and any other organization to which you belong that is promoting fairness, equality and basic human rights.

With one fleeting month before the year is over, I want to thank as many people as possible who have participated in events and supported the League of Women Voters of Berrien and Cass Counties. If you attended a luncheon, a forum, our recent fund-raising reception/documentary viewing; if you donated time or money; if you helped register voters; if you encouraged friends, family, and acquaintances to become familiar with and support the LWVBCC, thank you, thank you!

I wish each of you a happy, healthy, peaceful December, holiday(s), end-of-year celebration(s) and a warm beginning to 2017.

"Great Lakes, Bad Lines" League Event at the Vickers

The viewing at the Vickers Theater on Tuesday, November 15, of the documentary "Great Lakes, Bad Lines" was a wonderful success for the League of Women Voters of Berrien and Cass Counties. The theater was nearly "full to capacity" and those in attendance were generous with their donations and enthusiastic and supportive of the documentary and of the comments shared with us by Kes Marcel.
Kes is a dedicated, enthusiastic young adult active in the Michigan Coalition Against Tar Sands and had been recommended to us by the environmental organization "Oil and Water Don't Mix."

Thanks to Judy Scully and Bill Lindblom of the Vickers, thanks to Kes Marcel, thanks to all of you who attended and to the League members who worked to make this event the success it was.
If you would like more information on the documentary, you can search http://oilandwaterdontmix.org . For more information on the tar sands issue, go to  www.michigancats.org.

Miscellaneous Notes

Congratulations to LWVBCC board member Liz Ennis who was elected to a seat on the non-partisan New Buffalo City Council. Apparently we weren't keeping Liz busy enough with League responsibililties :-)

Please note the date change for our January board meeting. Due to board member winter schedules, our next board meeting will be held January 5 at 1:00 p.m. at Three Oaks Public Library.

We've also changed the regular meeting date from the third Tuesday of each month to the second Tuesday of each month. Same time, 1:00 p.m.

If you think you would enjoy being a part of the dynamic board of LWVBCC, please contact any one of us. We're wanting to add 2 or 3 new members early in 2017.

December 2016 Newsletter "extras"

A big welcome to Dorothy Parker who has agreed to join the board of the League of Women Voters of Berrien and Cass Counties. Dorothy will be a valuable addition to the Board.
If you've thought about joining the board, PLEASE come to our next board meeting (Thursday, January 5) or, if you cannot attend, let one of us know you're interested.

John Ripley, our Treasurer, has stepped up and agreed to take over from Mia Doerschner the assembling and publishing of the monthly newsletter. From time to time each of us on the board contributes an article we feel will be of interest to you, our members. If there's something you'd like for one of us to comment on, let us know. Meantime, thanks, Mia, for having handled this responsibility so well for the League. We wish you well in your new full-time job. Congratulations!

Be sure to visit the LWVBCC website to view links to videos of luncheon presentations and forum events: lwvbcc.org.

Coming up on Wednesday, February 8: A general membership meeting to consider updating the current Michigan Taxation and Budgeting Position. The new/revised position will be titled Government Finance . We'll confirm time and place in our January newsletter.

Dues Reminder

In order to be included in our 2017 member roster, your dues payment must be received no later than January 31.
The January 31 date is imposed upon us by LWVUS headquarters. After 5:00 p.m. that day, your membership expires. Please don't let that happen.

If you've been procrastinating, take action now and get those dues renewed. It's not just that we'll miss seeing your name in the roster, but that we honestly, sincerely enjoy seeing you in person and value your support and participation.

You know how much can be accomplished working together. Please continue to support the League of Women Voters of Berrien and Cass Counties.

If any of your contact information has changed (phone number, e-mail address, physical address, etc.) please notify John Ripley right away. johnmripley@gmail.com.

League Book Club

The book selection for Monday, January 9, is "This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs The Climate" by Naomi Klein. I'm only 65 pages into the book and am half afraid to read further. D. R. Tucker writing in the Washington Monthly states: " This Changes Everything is not just a book, not just a moment, not just a movement. It is a weapon of justice. It is a path of survival."

Whether or not you can get to Annette Van Dusen's for this discussion, read this book. Let Annette know if you'll be there by calling her at 269 469 0806.

Party Invitations
e-vites (e-mail invitations) were sent out in mid-November. In case you missed yours, the League's holiday party will be Friday, December 9, starting at 6 p.m. at the home of Lorraine and Jim Stepanek, 16695 White Oak Lane, New Buffalo. Please respond to the e-vite or call 269 469 5852 to let the Stepanek's know you're coming and what you'll bring to share.

I wish you and your loved ones good health throughout December and beyond.
