Help us reach our goal of 100% participa tion!
Eric's Earful:
Musings from the Head of School

It is hard to believe that February is already upon us.  We are over halfway to the end of the school year.  It has been wonderful to be involved in this school and I look forward to seeing what the future has in store for this beautiful school.  As our Board is considering the future direction of the school, I think it is important to consider the tenets of the Montessori environment to ensure that we are constantly improving as a school within this philosophy.

One of the areas Montessori focused intently on was the structure and order in the classroom.  In my early Montessori learnings, I found it difficult to comprehend the freedom she preached with the structure and order that was expected in the classroom.   Only through continued learning about the environment did I start to understand it better.  Montessori looked at her classroom as a concrete representation of the world that was supporting the student and his development.  Montessori saw how important it was for the child to internalize the order he sees in order to make sense of the larger world.

Montessori theorized that there is a sensitive period for order which occurs between the ages of one and three years of age. This is when the child begins to draw conclusions of the world around him. If there is not order to his environment, the child's sense of reason may be off since he will not be able to understand what he is seeing and what he knows to be true.  This has some considerations for any move of our school because the environment is important for our students.  We have to be careful to consider everything we can, from classrooms to outdoor space, in order to provide our students with an environment that will benefit them and their needed sense of order.

Student Count Day is Wednesday, February 8th

Student count day is Wednesday, February 8th.  Please call the office if your child will not be in attendance.  The school receives 10% of their funding from the spring count day. Thank you.
Future of Our School Update

We want to assure parents and families that Leelanau Montessori will have a home and be a school going forward!  We have several options in front of us and we're exploring all of them. Next year (2017-2018), LMPSA will remain at the SBPS location but if SBPS chooses not to renew our charter and lease, we are investigating options for LMPSA own, independent facility and campus. We are excited for our families to be a part of this new venture and contribute to the ideas.

The Ad Hoc Committee- The Future of Our School next meeting will be held Wednesday February 8, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. at Hop Lot in conjunction with the Facilities Committee meeting scheduled at 7:00 p.m. If you would like to receive the ad hoc committee updates and agendas, please contact Colleen Macdonald to have her add your email to the list. It was wonderful to see such a large group of people at the last meeting.  Please join us to help plan for the future of our school.  All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact any of the following people:

Board President- Sarah Bordeaux

Board Vice President/Ad Hoc Committee Chair- Colleen Macdonald macdonaldc@leelanaumontessori.org

Head of School- Eric Royston

Wednesday, February 8th at 2:15 p.m. in the music room.
Please come with any questions or concerns you may have and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee.  Dinner to Go will be going on as well.  We hope to see many of you!
Dinner to Go  has been a long time Montessori tradition.  We encourage each family to prepare a dish or meal to bring to school for this simple fundraiser.   It is always fun to explore all the different foods that are brought in.  Some examples are your favorite soup recipe, an old family favorite casserole recipe, grandmas secret recipe, loaves of bread, a pie, an ethnic family favorite recipe, pasta salad, etc. Whatever you bring will be awesome, we just love to have lots of food to choose from. Truthfully, getting people to buy the food is no problem (staff love this fundraiser) but we really need parents, grandparents, and even family friends to prepare the food.  Thank you to all the families and your support for this fundraiser!

Observation and Enrollment

Leelanau Montessori encourages all families to schedule an observation of your child's environment, as well as the environment they may move up to the following year.  It is such a joy to sit in the environment and observe the wonderful learning that is happening here at our school.  Please follow the link below to schedule an observation.

It is hard to believe that re-enrollment begins in February.  Due to the calendar and the policies put in place, there is a small window to return your child's re-enrollment form.  A returned application ensures your child a place at our school for the following year.  We cannot stress enough how important returning your application by the deadline is.  With this information we will be planning for the 2017-18 staff and classrooms.  Please see below the re-enrollment and enrollment schedules.

*Applications will go home in Tuesday folders on Tuesday, February 7th.

If you have any friends or family that may be interested in Leelanau Montessori for their children, please have them contact the office to schedule a tour and observation.  Word of mouth is our best advertisement!  Thank you.
