As the Thanksgiving Holiday approaches I have been reflecting on 2018, challenges and successes. I am amazed at the speed that change has occurred in K-12 education in just 6 years and know that much of it is needed but perhaps not all. The major reforms that have been implemented have been at times confusing and punitive. After 38 years in this work, what makes it easier is that I know that the change we have recently experienced will change again and again. Men and women, including you, with noble intentions want for a better place and learning environment for our children and youth. You all will continue to attempt to get it right. For that I am thankful.
Our challenges are great but success abounds. MEMSPA continues to grow in political influence and provides greater value to members than ever before. Resources including insurance coverage expansion, no cost continuing education hours, peer-to-peer networking and Micro-Credentialing are but a few of the new additions. MEMSPA’s website offers more resources than ever before.. #MEMSPAchat engages hundreds of educators each week trending to the number one ed chat in the country. As of this morning a record 522 principals have registered for our December conference. All of this thanks to all of you- Leaders of Learning.
As I visit schools and speak to principals from Marquette to Detroit I continue to be amazed and thankful. You provide the highest levels of instructional leadership, manage facilities, complete a bazillion staff observations and evaluations, cheer, lead and provide the best care possible for hundreds of students in your care. Ten to twelve hour days have become the norm. I am thankful that you lead with compassion and grit. You are creating an environment for student successes out of challenges that once seemed insurmountable.
We live in tumultuous yet exciting times of boundless opportunity and must take time to be thankful for the good in our lives and the people that make it so.
Life is full of give and take. Give Thanks and take nothing for granted.
Today I thank you.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours,
Best regards,
Paul
