Congratulations Outstanding Practicing Principal, Craig McCalla
Paul Liabenow, MEMSPA Executive Director
Craig McCalla, MEMSPA’s 2017 Outstanding Practicing Principal, was recognized last week in Washington D.C. as an NAESP 2018 National Distinguished Principal. Craig, and his wife Kathryn, were treated to several once in a lifetime experiences, including a U. S. State Department reception, tour of the White House and personal conversation with leadership at the U.S. Department of Education. The multi-day celebration concluded with an NAESP awards banquet, where distinguished principals from around the country were honored with dinner, messages from education dignitaries including Asst Secretary of Education, a gold plated school bell and a beautiful plaque commemorating their honor and dedication. We are so proud of Craig and thankful for his outstanding leadership as educator and instructional leader. Craig’s message last week to education leaders from coast-to-coast resonated with every event participant. He reminded us that, "All children deserve the very best education possible. A ll means all, without exception."

Congratulations, Craig. You continue to represent MEMSPA and the State of Michigan with distinction. Thank you.
Flight Plans for Collaborative Teams
Dr. Thomas Many and Tesha Ferriby Thomas
Most would agree that being a commercial airliner pilot is a complex and sophisticated job that takes years of training and hours of practice to master all of the skills necessary to safely fly an airplane. Most would also agree that for a pilot, lives hang in the balance. Like a pilot, a teacher works a complex and sophisticated job that takes years of training and hours of practice to master the skills required to ensure that all students learn to high levels. It is also true that for a teacher, lives hang in the balance.

When a pilot prepares to fly a plane full of passengers to a destination, he or she is required to file a flight plan. The flight plan clarifies where the plane is going and ensures the pilot has thoughtfully planned the most efficient and effective route possible. As the pilot creates the plan, he or she must take into consideration a variety of factors such as distance, weather, and the amount of fuel required to reach the destination. An effective flight plan is designed to confirm that the pilot has carefully considered all options and alternatives to ensure the plane safely reaches its destination in the shortest amount of time.

Good afternoon,
The weather is getting cooler, days are getting shorter, pumpkin spice is in everything and political ads are raining down on us! It must be Fall and election season is just around the corner.

Speaking of election season do you know who your legislators are? Do they know who YOU are? I encourage each of you to send an email and introduce yourself to those in your district. Working alongside our elected officials (on both sides of the aisle) is critical in these days of education. Sometimes I find benefits in working with legislators (or even if they just know your name) and what district you are in.

Take for example, our State Representative Julie Alexander. She reached out to me as she had a group she partners with reach out to her from AT&T for their community service project: “Tools for learning,” which is AT&T’s Pioneer group of employees. These employees develop their own project to support local communities.

A Testimonial from MEMSPA Member, Shellyann Keelaan:
"Imagine Learning has been a wonderful educational tool to help prepare our older students for the middle school curriculum. It has been a great resource to help students review fundamental math skills at an individual pace. Each student has different strengths and areas on concern in math and Imagine Learning has given students the opportunity to work on strengthening those skills at a rate that is appropriate for their learning needs.

When new students enter our school Imagine Math has been a fantastic tool to help our teachers know where a student will need support especially if they are coming from a school with a different core curriculum. We use it as part of our data reviews to help look at skills students need more support in during small group skill based interventions.

We have had great experiences with Imagine Math and we are so proud of the success and growth our students have experienced working with the program."
