When the first school bell rang for the 2018-19 school year, you may have noticed that we have new and strengthened safety measures in place to provide a safer environment for your child while he or she learns with us this year.
Some improvements, especially a new system for visitors to our schools, will create a delay or inconvenience for staff members and parents. It is an important additional step to take regardless, and we ask for your patience while we roll out the new system.
Starting this school year, Maize USD 266 will use the
Raptor Visitor Management System
in our schools to strengthen safety for students and employees. Part of keeping those in our care safe, of course, is simply knowing who is in our buildings at all times, and this system will allow us to do that. Using it, our employees will screen visitors, contractors, and volunteers in our schools.
All of our school buildings have secure vestibules, which require staff member permission for any visitor -- including parents -- to access the building once school has started. To further improve safety, we are strengthening the required protocol to allow visitor access via the secure vestibule at our front office doors. All visitors now will be screened prior to accessing any school building.
During their first visit to the school with this new system, visitors will be asked to present a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, which an employee will scan into the system. It will check the visitor's information against a national database of registered sexual offenders. Once entry is approved, the system will print a self-adhesive name tag with the visitor's photo on it for him or her to wear while in the building. In addition to identifying the visitor, the name tag will include the date and details of the visit. The district will not share any information collected with any outside agencies unless required by law enforcement. After the first visit, the system will save the visitor's information, allowing an employee to do a quick search of the information without requiring access to the visitor's physical ID card.
The process will be a requirement for anyone, including parents, contractors, and vendors, entering the school beyond its front office. Parents coming to pick up their child or drop off paperwork, for example, will not need to go through the Raptor screening process.
The Raptor process does not replace the volunteer background checks the district requires. Those who have conducted a background check still will need to use the Raptor system each time they enter a school.
We ask that visitors please plan ahead and schedule a little extra time when visiting our schools to allow for this process.
The safety of our students is our highest priority. Thank you in advance for your understanding and your support as we continue to enhance school safety protocols in our district.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.

We are very excited to announce that Maize Central has a new Buddy Bench on our playground! A Buddy Bench is a simple way to end loneliness and encourage friendships. If students don't have anyone to play with or need a friend, they can sit on the bench. When other students see them on the bench, they will ask them to play. We are hopeful that this will not only encourage new friendships but also deter bullying in the long run.
Our one-of-a-kind bench was designed, crafted, and donated by Metal Arts of Wichita. It was installed on our playground just before school started. We will be installing a sign with reminders of how to use the bench very soon. We are looking forward to dedicating it in the near future and watching our students put it to good use.

VOLUNTEER BACKGROUND CHECK
|
Maize USD 266 is extremely thankful for the many volunteers who selflessly give of their time in our classrooms. Our schools are stronger thanks to the help and support of our community members, and our students benefit from this relationship.
Safety is a top priority for the district, which since 2008 has conducted background checks of potential volunteers. According to Maize Board of Education policy, (Section 20, Item D) "volunteers who work in a classroom on a regular basis, supervise students during a field trip when a staff member is not present, or work with students away from the supervision of a classroom teacher are required to have a background check." This extra step helps ensure that we are keeping our students safe.
Thanks to all parents and volunteers for continued support of our students and district!

DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP LOCATIONS
|
|
BEGINNING OF THE YEAR REMINDERS
|
- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, All Day Kdg. & 1st - 5th grade school hours are 8:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. AM Kindergarten will begin at 8:45 a.m. and concludes at 11:45 a.m. On Wednesday, All-Day Kdg. & 1st-5th grade school hours are 8:45 a.m. to 3:23 p.m. AM kindergarten will begin at 8:45 a.m. and dismiss at 11:45 a.m.
- The front door and the southeast door will be unlocked at 8:25 a.m. each morning. If your child arrives at that time, he/she will be asked to wait in the supervised cafeteria until the 1st morning bell at 8:35 a.m. Children waiting in the cafeteria may eat breakfast beginning at 8:25 a.m. All other students may receive breakfast beginning at 8:35 a.m.
- We ask that parents remain in the lobby until the 8:35 a.m. bell rings. If parents plan on being in the building after the 8:45 a.m. bell, please come to the office to sign in and receive a visitor's pass.
- If you have changes in your child's regular transportation arrangements, you MUST send a note to the child's teacher. For last minute changes in your child's transportation plans, please call the office by 3:00 p.m. and leave a message under transportation on our voice menu (#5). If the office is not notified by these times, your child will be expected to follow normal procedure.
- Please call the office by 9:45 a.m. (722-0427) if your child will be absent or late. You may request homework until 10:00 a.m. Homework will be available any time after 2:30 p.m.
- All outside exits to the building (including the front doors) are locked at 8:45 a.m. All visitors and volunteers must check in at the office and are asked to wear a visitor sticker. If you have a delivery for your child (lunch, jacket, homework) we ask that you leave it in the front office, and we will see he or she receives it. This will help decrease classroom interruptions.
- Party invitations CANNOT be distributed at school. We ask that you mail invitations to personal events or parties directly to the students you are inviting, rather than distributing them at school. Parents and guardians may opt to include your address, primary phone number, email addresses, students school and student's grade level in the Skyward Family Access Student Directory so that other families with login rights to Family Access can view your contact information.
- Please be sure the office always has current contact information so we will be able to contact you in case of an emergency.
- Because students are not allowed to bring balloons or glass items on the bus, the Maize school district will not be accepting any flower, candy, cookie, or balloon bouquet deliveries to students. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
- Just a reminder that the school district does not provide any type of health or accident insurance for injuries incurred by your child at school. The school district makes insurance available to those who wish to purchase it on a voluntary basis. Forms may be obtained in each school office.
- Please remember to review the policy on sending medication to school. All medications must be transported to the school health office staff by the parent/guardian. Students may not transport medications. All medications need to have a completed "Request for Administration of Medication" form in order for the nurse to give the medication. This form may be obtained from the Maize USD 266 website. Please contact Loni Smith at 350-2715 if you need assistance.
- Remember to furnish the office with a copy of any legal documentation in regard to custody issues.
|
|
A NOTE FROM NURSE LONI . . .

They must be fever free for 12 hours without the use of fever reducing medications before returning to class. Ill students need to be picked up from school quickly in order to prevent the spread of disease to others. Parents are notified to pick up students when the school finds it necessary to send a student home. If the parent/guardian is unavailable, the emergency contact will be notified. Please keep family and emergency information current with the school.
SKYWARD HEALTH INFORMATION
It is the responsibility of the parent to update medical information and contact numbers in Skyward Family Access during enrollment and throughout the school year. Teachers, coaches and other school staff rely on Skyward for important health information like asthma, seizures, diabetes, and food allergies. In addition to updating Skyward, the parent/guardian must also personally communicate this information to the school nurse who will educate and train the appropriate staff. If parents and/or student have questions regarding school guidelines and policies in keeping students safe and healthy at school, please contact the school nurse.

CAPTURING KIDS' HEARTS
by
Ashley Proehl, 3rd Grade
|
|
Maize Central Elementary has adopted a program called Capturing Kids' Hearts. The focus of this program is to communicate effectively with students and families while developing positive relationships that create a positive learning environment. Each morning, teachers will greet your child with a handshake. We will also discuss "Good Things" going on in their lives, practice good listening skills, and enhance professional communication skills. Students will also learn to self-regulate their behavior using our Social Contract. The Social Contract is a set of classroom expectations developed by the students in each classroom. This is our third year using this program, and we are so excited that we have it in our school. Capturing Kids' Hearts impacts our entire day, from the moment the students walk into the building each day until the dismissal bell rings.
|
|
If you have not already done so, please put your child's first and last name inside their jackets, coats, lunchbox, and book bags. It is most helpful in identifying lost items. Thank you for your help.
|
|
Individual Lifetouch photos will be taken on Tuesday, September 11th beginning at 9:00 a.m. Your child will be receiving an order packet soon. If you would like to order pictures, the photographer MUST have your order at the time the photo is taken.
|
|
Parents are required to enter the building and sign out their son/daughter if they are picked up after 4:05 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or after 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Just a reminder that Latchkey is available for anyone that is in need of before or after school care.

It is always best to make arrangements before your child comes to school. Students are not allowed to call home for a note.
Please send a note signed by the parent or guardian if there will be a change in plans on how your child will be getting home after school. Your child will be expected to ride the bus if that is the normal way of transportation without a signed note. This is the PREFERRED method of communication.
If you are unable or forgot to send a note and you wish to pick up your child, you may email the teacher before 12:00 p.m. Teachers have been instructed to reply to your email. If you don't receive a response, the teacher likely did not receive the message.
Please copy the secretaries to help ensure your child will receive the message. thamer@usd266.com, slambert@usd266.com,
jjakubov@usd266.com
If you were unable to send a note or email the classroom teacher, you may call the school and leave a message for student pick up by pressing 5. Please leave your child's name, teacher's name and the change in transportation. Please be advised that messages will NOT be retrieved after 3:00 p.m. and your child will be expected to follow normal procedures.
Your cooperation is greatly appreciated!

USD 266 uses the Skyward Food Service and RevTrak fee payment systems. Please check your email and phone numbers in Skyward, so you may be alerted when their child has a balance of $7.00 or less. Parents receive an email when your child has $7.00 left in their account. Parents receive a second email after their child has one lunch left. When no money is left on the account, your child will go to the office and call his/her parents. Please put money into the account that day. Parents will also receive a third email when their child has a zero balance.
Please check with your child if he/she is eating breakfast at school or getting a second milk, the charges add up quickly. If you have more than one child, please check both lunch accounts. We are not allowed to go into one child's account to pay for a sibling.
Parents may keep as large a balance as they wish in a child's account (for example: $5.00, $10.00, $15.00 or more). If the student doesn't have enough in his/her lunch account to cover a meal, the account will be charged for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and milk if the student chooses to take one. No meal charges will be allowed.
If you have any questions regarding Skyward and the RevTrak system, please call our school office. We want every child to have a good lunch, every day!
