MSMS Parent Newsletter
 May 2017
Principal's Corner
Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s):

This week, we have been celebrating National Teacher Appreciation Week.  We would like to sincerely thank the MSMS staff for their continued hard work and diligence to ensure our students are provided the best possible education and academic experiences.

As you know, the last day of school for our students is scheduled for  Thursday, May 18, 2017.  We would like to thank our students and parents for such a great year.  We continue to be impressed with our students each year, and have truly enjoyed working with each and every family this year.  Thank you all for such a wonderful year!

We hope you all have a wonderful and safe summer vacation!

Gillian Gaskill Macias
Principal
Maize South Middle School

Important Reminders
    • Remember to furnish the office with a copy of any legal documentation in regard to custody issues.
    • If your student is going to be tardy to school, they are allowed three parent excused tardies per quarter, not including medical excuses with notes.  Please call the school if your student is going to be late for any reason.
    • KS State Law requires notes for medical absences.  Please be sure to provide a doctor's note to the front office when your child has seen the doctor, dentist, etc.
    •  If you need to pick up your child from school during school hours, please remember that we cannot pull your student out of class until you have come into the office to sign them out.
    • Just a reminder that the school district does not provide any type of health or accident insurance for injuries incurred by your child at school.  The school district makes insurance available to those who wish to purchase it on a voluntary basis.  Forms may be obtained in each school office.
    • Please check your student's lunch account balance in Skyward Family Access regularly to be sure they have enough money for breakfast and/or lunch.
Thanks for your help!

Nurse's Corner

Get Moving
The American Heart Association recommends that children and adolescents participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. Healthy adults ages 18-65 should be getting at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity 5 days per week. There are lots of activities you can do together; working in the yard or garden, shooting hoops in the driveway, jumping rope, swimming, biking, playing catch, hiking, skating, dancing, hide-and-seek, playing at a park, etc. Movement is movement; the more you do the healthier you'll be. Doing something, no matter how small, is better than doing nothing! Every little bit counts and it all adds up to burning more calories.
The best way to lead your child to a healthy lifestyle is to set a positive example yourself.  It's important to show your children that exercise is a key factor to living a happy, healthy life.  Parents should provide children with opportunities for physical activity and it should be fun. Planning family outings and vacations that include physical activity is a good way to make exercise fun.

Be active with your kids. Get moving!!!
Have a safe and healthy summer!!!

Reminders:

1)   If you sent medication to school this year, it needs to be picked up. Medications cannot be stored over the summer and will need to be picked up by May 15.  Medications not picked up will be sent home with your student. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact the School Nurse, Joann Wheeler RN at
350-2508. Thank you for help with this matter.

2)   Student entering 7th grade need to have updated immunization record showing a Tdap on file with the school nurse.

MSMS Retirees

MSMS would like to say a special Thank You to our amazing staff members who will be retiring at the end of our current school year.  We have truly enjoyed our time with  these wonderful teachers , truly appreciate  their   invaluable service to our students, and wish  them   all  the very best of luck in  their   next adventure.

Rene Dysart  - Mrs. Dysart, our current FACS Teacher, has taught for
34 years, and all 34 years have been with the Maize School District.  Upon retiring in May of 2017, Mrs. Dysart plans to spend more time with all of her family.  Mrs. Dysart has two daughters who live out of town, so she plans to visit them much more often.  Mrs. Dysart and her husband hope to travel as well.  Mrs. Dysart also enjoys gardening.  She has a three-acre yard that she takes care of, in addition to a large vegetable garden.  Mrs. Dysart loves time in the sunshine, so she will  enjoy more of that as well!  Mrs. Dysart will miss all the fun she has had with students over the years.  She has had lots of special days together with her students, and has worked with so many really amazing kids.  Mrs. Dysart feels it has been neat seeing the kids catch on and love the projects and labs they have done in FACS class.  It makes Mrs. Dysart happy when former students come up to see her, and tell her that they still remember and use skills she taught them.  Congratulations to Mrs. Dysart on her retirement.  We wish her the very best!

Lisa Jones - Mrs. Lisa Jones, a current MSMS 7th Grade Math Teacher, has taught for 21 years.  Upon retiring in May of 2017, Mrs. Jones and her husband are moving to Boulder, Colorado to be near family and enjoy retirement.  Mrs. Jones will miss working with her 7th grade students, as they make her laugh each and every day.  Mrs. Jones stated that her students are open to learning, they want to please, and have been a joy to teach.  Congratulations to Mrs. Jones on her retirement.  We wish her the very best!

8th Grade Science Tie-dye Project

By Monday, May 15 th, 8th grade students may bring in an item to tie dye in science, and they will also need a zipper bag (gallon or quart size) for it to go into.  If they would like to keep their hands clean, they may want a
pair of disposable gloves. The item needs to be primarily cotton and pre-washed (t-shirt, socks, pillowcase, boxers, cheer shorts, etc.).   Please make sure your child's name is written on the item of clothing and the bag with permanent marker. Dyeing will take place on Tuesday, May 16th.  We will send home instructions on how it should be laundered.

Students may begin dropping off their items at any time.  If you'd just like to donate a box of gloves for the class, that would be wonderful!  (We have 23-26 students in each class.)  Thank you for all of your support this year!
