Dear Manna supporter,

At a recent staff meeting , I showed a photo of a coliseum in Rome, Italy and described how the columns provided stability to the building throughout the ages.  While Manna isn't quite as ancient, I used the photo as a metaphor for the three pillars on which we base our work: food distribution, education, & advocacy.  Many in the community are familiar with the fact that we distribute millions of pounds of food every year.  More and more are taking advantage of our grocery store and "pop up" tours with classes focused on diabetes and obesity prevention.  But in our three decades of work, Manna hasn't yet tapped into the power of mobilizing our participants, volunteers, &  donors- people like you.  If we all want a County where all people, at all times, have access to good food in welcoming spaces, we need to give new attention to the role of advocacy as a tool for eliminating hunger.

Typically when people think of advocacy, they imagine testifying before politicians.  Manna does that, of course, having recently appeared before both the City of Rockville as well as the Montgomery County Council, to make our case for grants supporting food assistance & education.  But to address the systemic, root causes of why people are hungry and to create solutions that lead to a community where all live in dignity, we need to do more than secure grants and contracts.   Manna Food Center also needs to engage those we serve to help you all be part of the political process.

That's one of the reasons why we are participating next Monday, April 24 in a rally organized by Nonprofit Montgomery to address budget cuts in the FY18 County budget that directly impact social services such as food, housing, youth services, and health care.  Yes, the audience is elected officials on the verge of making funding decisions, but the point of the gathering is not just to preserve and expand the social safety net.  The purpose is to rally individuals like you, who believe in the work of Manna Food Center and other not-for-profits-to support the values that make Montgomery County great. Click  for more details about the event, which begins at 8:15 a.m. in downtown Rockville.   If you have questions about our advocacy work, please don't hesitate to contact me directly via jackie.

Montgomery Serves Awards
    Monday April 24, 6:30 pm
   Imagination Stage, Bethesda

Be our guest for one of the most inspiring evenings of the year, the  Montgomery Serves Awards gala, a free community event honoring some of our County's most amazing volunteers & community leaders. Two of this year's honorees are connected with Manna.  Congratulations, Jeremy & Marilyn!

Jeremy Lichtenstein is the founder of Kids in Need Distributors (KIND), an organization that provides supplemental food to elementary and middle school students for the weekend.  Jeremy is a respected Manna colleague and we work closely with him through our own weekend bag program, Smart Sacks.   We are proud to call Jeremy a friend and partner in the work to create a hunger-free Montgomery County and congratulate him on his recent well-deserved Montgomery Serves award.

Marilyn Simonds has been a referral office volunteer since Manna first began. She has shared with me that she was one of Manna's original members of the Board. She is amazing not just for being a longtime volunteer, but Marilyn also takes on 2 shifts every Friday.

Congratulations to these outstanding Manna Supporters
