Maple Leaf Auxiliary NEWS
The Auxiliary hosted a Purse Party fundraiser in early March. The event was well attended by friends of Maple Knoll and everyone had a fun, purse filled afternoon. Monies raised from ticket sales and raffles will be used towards projects that benefit residents.
After 30 years as Gift Shop Manager, Jane Brown has decided to retire from her position. We are very thankful for the countless hours Jane put in to the shop and she will be missed. Want to join the Auxiliary? Contact Mary Kammer in the Volunteer Office at 513.782.2420. |
Lighting The Way
For every one of us, there comes a time when we need help. The Future Care Fund, the MKC benevolent care program, is there for residents who have unexpectectedly come to need financial assistance with their care. You can light the way for our neighbors and friends by supporting our annual fund drive through a gift. Gifts can be made by check, credit card or online at www.mkcommunities.org. For more information, call 513.782.2424. |
Gluten Free Maple Knoll Lynette Peterson, Director of Food Service, recently completed a certification program through the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness and has implemented a gluten free menu on campus.
Celiac Disease is a genetic autoimmune disorder. Those diagnosed have a reaction when they ingest gluten; the protein in wheat, barley and rye. This reaction prevents the body from absorbing nutrients. Part of the gluten free program at Maple Knoll include a separate cooking area in the kitchen, complete with separate utensils to avoid any cross-contamination. |
Words with MK Friends
Society has a way of defining our roles in life but for Iris Saxon , a black woman raised in the south and coming of age in the early 1940s, her parents were not interested in society's definitions.
At a time when race could have been a factor in holding her back, Iris' father, a minister who graduated from an all black college, taught her that the color of your skin is not a stop gap to holding you back in life.
"His message was simple, you don't let society define who you are, you define yourself", said Saxon, who went on to graduate from college and work for the government.
Passed down to the next generation, Iris' son, Frank Saxon, was raised on the same edict. Frank attended the Air Force Academy and went on to become the first black Chief Pilot for Delta Airlines.
Now Iris Saxon has two grandchildren coming of age in a different world, yet her father's message still rings true. "Children today, white or black, have amazing opportunities," says Iris, "Nobody can stop you, but you." |
