The Power of the Holy Spirit

Have you ever considered the cross and the flame that symbolizes The United Methodist Church? The cross and the flame are always together. Wherever we go throughout the world we recognize The UMC by the symbol of the cross and flame. When we see this symbol, we know that it is part of who we are because it reveals what we believe. The cross symbolizes the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the flame reveals the power and presence of the Holy Spirit that Jesus left behind for his followers, and which breathes life and breath into the church. We see this at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit comes upon the people and formed the church. It is a cataclysmic moment because Spirit unites the people into one faith. The early church would never have formed if it had not been for the power of the Spirit bringing forth life, much like the act of creation when the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. The Spirit is God's acting agent in the world. Sometimes we forget that the Holy Spirit dwells not just among us, but within us. Why then do we so often just relegate talk of the Holy Spirit to one day a year, on the day of Pentecost?

Imagine, if we listened for the breath of the Spirit in our own life more often. Where would it lead us? What if, as a church, we leaned into the power of the Holy Spirit rather than on our own abilities? What if we prayed that the creative life that formed the world would also reform and transform us, our community, and the world?

Sunday, as we continue getting  Back to the Basics, we will consider the power of the Holy Spirit and what it means for the Spirit of truth to be in and among us all.  Come, Holy Spirit, Come!

Faithfully yours,
