Dear Owners,
We are very much looking forward to catching up with all of you over the summer months.
Can anyone believe we are already into June? I for one am happy for some beach weather! Speaking of the beaches, BHI finally brought out their 2017 map and the beach accesses on it are now either green or red. Green marks public access, red marks private access. As far as I can tell all are still ‘public’ but green marks emergency 911 access locations.
The Island is heating up for a busy summer; the market is well stocked and ready, including the new outdoor area serving adult beverages! The restaurant owners have been coming by with their new menus with some delicious new menu items.
Ever tried…
Walk with Ghosts – this tour is fun for the whole family. Lasts about two hours and takes you through 350 years of island history! You can make your reservation at the sail shop.
Historical tour – I thought I knew just about everything about Bald Head but I did not know it was home to a hospital in the Revolutionary war, did you? You can find out more about this and the tour by going to Old Baldy Foundation.
Tip for your next visit
Please remember you can call ahead to the market and they will deliver anything from a bottle of wine to a full weeks’ worth of groceries. They’ll even put your items in your fridge/freezer if necessary. So don’t stress and lug all that food. Support your local Bald Head Island Market! For details please contact the market directly at 910 457 7450
Your home away from home
Our shed and attic are beginning to ‘fill up’ again; we don’t have a lot of storage therefore we kindly ask you to please remove any items that you no longer use. If you have more than one bin please combine and keep only one. Fishing rods must not have hooks or be tied securely for the safety of everyone. Permitted items for storage in the outside shed are beach chairs, umbrellas, toys, fishing rods & kites. Large coolers, small grills and other bulky items are not permitted.
You will see our cart covers piled up in the shed; we have had such indecisive weather! So they have been pulled on and off numerous times in the past two weeks. When the weather stabilizes they will be pulled, checked and stored correctly. In the meantime please excuse!
Pests
The Island starts to get buggy around this time especially on the very quiet still days. For your convenience we have bug spray located on the shelf next to the first aid kit. We also have creams and lotions for bites located in the first aid kit should you need.
911
Please remember if you have a true emergency call 911 right away and then call the innkeeper on duty for assistance. 910 448 0717 If you feel the situation does not require immediate attention there is a daily drop in Dosher hospital clinic next to the police station, if it’s evening time call your innkeeper and they will advise you how to get the help you need without the sirens and lights!
Breakfast
As you probably know we have a wonderful group of women working as our ‘breakfast committee’ some of you have voiced ideas & opinions, please share these with owner and head of the committee, Joan Baumer @ joanbaumer@gmail.com
One thing that will not change at breakfast is the incredible views we wake up to every morning. This picture was taken the morning after a full moon, watching the sunrise peacefully over the marsh is one of my favorite times of day.
Coming up…
July 4th celebrations! This is a very busy time on the Island and favorite amongst boaters. It is so cool to take a boat out to the river under the stars and have the fireworks display going off right above your head! For a fee the ferry offers a ride out also! Please remember owner Lynn Derrick has a boat slip for rent just a few steps from our front door. If you are interested in renting the slip at this time or anytime, please contact Lynn directly on 803 629 6223
Wish list
Our wonderful new president Tim Roche was visiting recently, he asked, Jo, ‘if you had a wish list what would you like for the inn’? We were in the dining room, where he had just come in from eating outside. It was clear we were both on the same page… umbrellas to keep the sun off and ‘hey presto’ the very next day, guess what we had outside, yip you guessed it, two beautiful sea blue umbrellas. This got me to thinking about a ‘wish list’.
If you are so inclined to offer a ‘wish’ to the MHI, here is a few items that we would love to have for the enjoyment of everyone.
Kitchen items - New pots and pans, knifes and pretty serving plates for breakfast service.
Outdoor chair size seat cushions (now that we have those beautiful umbrellas…)
Decorative outdoor citronella candles.
DVD’s you don’t watch anymore, books you don’t read anymore, new board games or puzzles. If you would like to bring or send anything please contact me at jo@marshharbourinn.com
July 4th ‘Happy Hours’ …
We will offer refreshments and snacks over the July 4th festivities; dates and times will be posted within the inn. If you would like to host a wine and cheese or cocktail hour at the inn during this special time please contact me directly either at the above email address or at 910 742 6593.
Kitchen time
In my many years at the Marsh Harbour we have never had a need for the signup sheet for evening kitchen use. Owners tend to just work around each other and it usually becomes quite the party! That said, we do have a signup sheet prepared. If you’d prefer private time with family and friends in the kitchen and/or dining area let the innkeeper on duty know. They will place the signup sheet in the kitchen with your preferred time and notify the other owners/guests of possible times for kitchen use.
2017 is going to be a very good year at the Marsh Harbour Inn and 2018 will be even better! Please invite family and friends to ‘check us out’ and consider becoming part of the Marsh Harbour Inn Family.
Cheers to a wonderful summer.
Jo
