MARSH  HARBOUR  INN            BALD HEAD ISLAND  NC           EARLY SUMMER 2017
May & June 2017
As the season changes, we want to let you know about the upcoming activities at Marsh Harbour Inn.
We hope this newsletter is useful in planning your next visit and staying in touch. We look forward to seeing you soon.  Safe travels.
From the President

We just returned from a MHI Easter getaway- the Inn looked beautiful and was full of joyous people.
First, let me thank the retiring board members who provided their time, efforts and insights over the past few years. Laurene Zarnoch, Sharon Farnham and David Gregerson, your efforts provided the frame work for our on-going transition and we are so appreciative of your contributions and time.

The new board has been seated: Frank Antunez as Treasurer, Mike Kirk as Vice President and Tim Roche as President, joining Liz Dion, Cathy Ostrowski, David Baumer and Cliff Younger.
The focus and entrusted duty of the MHI board is to protect and enhance your investment, all the while proving a safe and first class destination to relax and renew.  This is an ongoing mission, and much progress has been made towards a future of prioritizing new opportunities and enhancements to both structure and services.

Your board understands and is committed to fiscal restraints while budgeting and investing to ensure our structure is sound and attractive.  A more detailed report is in process and will be shared in a specific communication.

The board is aware of your interest in being informed and we ask the same- please share your thoughts and concerns at any time.  Your insights and guidance are critical in establishing clear objectives and trust.

As always, we appreciate the efforts of our wonderful MHI staff and trust them to be warm, engaging and vigilant stewards of our beloved Inn.

An eclectic group we are; the nature of fractional ownership however common interest and passion for our property is evident as we sip coffee, share a meal or rock together on our porch.

Your board is enthused, focus and committed to keeping the good times and memory making alive and well.

I know we all agree MHI is a special and unique place both on Bald Head Island and in our hearts.

My best,
Tim

FYI & Friendly Reminders...

Suite Inventory
Owners are reminded to always check the inventory in their suites for missing items and let the Innkeeper know of any discrepancies.  A new inventory list will be posted in each suite (kitchen cabinet) for easy review.  Also, it is very important to leave the inventory as you find it, clean and neatly put away.  Please do not leave dishes in the suite for the innkeeper to clean.

Left Over Food
It is great to share leftovers with other owners and staff!  When checking out, please place your “sharable” in the owners refrigerator or in the kitchen with a note.  Do Not leave food in your refrigerator in your suite.

Pet Policy
Pet owners, please be sure to protect our Inn-vestment by protecting the furniture in your suite.  The innkeeper will provide you with old sheets / blankets upon your arrival. If you don't see them, please ask.

Energy Efficiency + Security
In an effort to keep utility bills down and to protect our investment, we ask that all suite doors be closed and lights off when the suite is vacant.

Suite Ownership Groups
Each suite has a Suite Captain assigned to it.  We have set up a network communication system using Nextdoor.com.  Many of the suite owners are interested in making improvements and changes to their investment.  Please work together with your Suite Captain and ownership group to discuss and agree upon improvements.  Email Cathie Ostrowski at [email protected] for more information

Innkeeper's Corner

Notes from Jo Artshtein...

Our little Island paradise was filled with Easter Weekenders! With as many Yachts in the Harbor as we usually have for the 4th of July festivities! There was plenty to do on the Island for little kids, big kids, and those of us who are still kids at heart.

The weather was perfect, with the Island giving us a glimpse of what’s to come with summer just around the corner.  Rumor has it that houses are filling up fast and we will see a record number of visitors.
At Marsh Harbour we celebrated with wine and cheese both Friday and Saturday afternoons, we certainly had some ‘fun guests’ in the building with Bloody Mary’s (made with bacon vodka!!) and Mimosas  being offered at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The kids are what make it so special. I was fortunate to spend a little time with Sabastian and Valeria, two very special Children belonging to our new treasurer Frank and wife (Meredith).  We were also able to convince them the Easter bunny came all the way to Bald Head Island! Two other special kids I’d like to mention Grace and Lyla Newsome children of Chris and Sara.  Grace thank you so much for the lovely card and letter.
Talking of kids – don’t forget the Pirates are coming back to BHI – June  23rd - 25th                                    We only have two open spots for this time period, if you are interested in renting please contact: John Cromer (Captains Quarters) Chris Newsome Ship Watch & Harbour view.

Some reminders
As we go into our busier months please remember:

Dogs: No matter how small or friendly all dogs MUST be on a least at all times in and around the building. This is so crucial for the safety and enjoyment of everyone. Please remember to clean up after your dog. For your convenience we have ‘doggie’ bags at the front desk

Golf carts: Please remove any beach items including drift wood and shells you may have collected from the golf carts at the end of your stay.

Breakfast: Please remember hot items will only be served from 8am—9am. We have a breakfast committee working to ensure a wonderful and diverse breakfast menu, more news on this to follow shortly.

Beach chairs/items: Please remember to put your name on your items and place back in the shed outside before your departure. We only have a few chairs for everyone and we do not provide umbrellas, extras can be rented at Riverside Adventure individually or as a set.

Building etiquette:                                                                                                                                      1. Please remember we require shirts for men and cover-ups for the ladies in the building at all times.
 2. Although we don’t mind you coming to breakfast in bare feet, be advised we do get broken glass fragments, so please be careful! However you cannot enter the kitchen in bare feet – NC health dept.: rules.
 3. We ask that you remind your children not to run in the hallways and to use indoor voices at all times.
 4. When arriving late at night please remember there is probably someone below or above you sound asleep.
 5. If you prepare a meal in the kitchen or make use of the grills, we ask that you clean up after yourself by loading the dishwasher (if you need help please do not hesitate to ask) the inn keeper on duty will be happy to empty it for you in the morning.  Please wash all items that are too large for the dishwasher and please hand wash wine glasses! We’ve encountered a lot of broken glass in our dishwasher. Please use grill brush to clean grill thoroughly.
 6. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult for breakfast.
Thank you in advance for understanding the need to have these rules in place, should you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to ask.

One of the most enjoyable parts of my job is getting everyone together to drink some good wine and enjoy the evening together.  Recently we had just that. Thank you to owner Denny Zahler whom every time in the building suggests a ‘get together’ and then comes up with a great dish to center a meal around. This time it was ‘spaghetti Soup’ so delicious. With the addition of salads, garlic breads, gluten free pasta dish by owner Alicia Gilsenan and more food thrown in by guests… we had a great time. The night ended in a solo recital by Elena (daughter of the Gilsenan’s) she is a joy to watch. Thank you Elena! And…a line dance by all – now that I should have captured on camera

Please if there is anything we can do before or during your staff ensure you have a wonderful time do not hesitate to ask, please just call me - Jo 910 742 6593

General Information:
Golf cart covers                                                                                                                                             Until summer comes around we ask that you please keep the golf cart cover on your cart and simply roll all the windows/doors open. In past years during spring time the covers have been pulled on and off over and over again. This makes it very hard to keep them nice! Once the warmer weather sets in, we will clean them thoroughly, dry them completely to avoid mold and store them for next year. Please be careful when climbing in and out and make sure to run the zippers up from the bottom on the sides to prevent your foot getting stuck on the bottom section.

Dog Blankets                                                                                                                                                 We are trying something new                                                                                                                         When you arrive you will find in your room a brown fabric bag, these bags contain two large covers for the sofa or chairs. We ask that you cover the furniture. Upon Check out we ask that you remove the dog covers and place back in the bag. The bags will be turned inside out and washed along with the blankets. If two covers are not enough please just ask your inn keeper on duty for extra. Thank you in advance for your help.

Beach Towels

Although we have a number of towels now and we do our best to keep up with demand, during the summer months we often run out half way through the day. For your convenience please consider bringing your own beach towels, this is certainly something that can be laundered and kept in your storage bin.

Storage Areas and Bins

The outside shed is for your beach chairs, toys and fishing gear only. If you don’t wish to share, please mark your item ‘private owner’ and put your name on with a permanent marker. Please do not leave hooks on fishing lines or rods. Please remember the rule is ONE bin per owner in our storage areas either the Pinnacle or Laundry room, sorry! But we simply will not have enough storage for more. Please do not leave any food items in these bins.

Daily maid service - shall include garbage removal, beds made up, and fresh towels. We apologize that we can no longer offer ‘dish washing’ service. Please make sure upon check out all dishes are washed and returned to the cabinets. If you need extra dish soap, drying towel or dish towels please do not hesitate to ask your inn on duty

Inventory – We are working on an inventory sheet for all suites which will be placed inside your kitchen cabinet. Listed will be all kitchen items which we are asking you to check before you leave. If you are missing something, we will happily help you find and return it to your suite. If you have ‘collected’ items during your stay, we ask that you return the items to the master kitchen to be put away by the innkeeper.

Digging Inn to Improve Our Inn...

Don't be shy...if you see something that you think needs improvement or could add a bit of beauty to our little piece of paradise...just go ahead and dig in!

Joan and friend Arnette decided to add some herbs to the garden in April.

Tim helped get mulch spread around the landscape..

We need a few more knockout roses in the front...

Check with Jo on projects before you start, please.

Nextdoor Communication
We have set up  Nextdoor.com as a way of communicating with Inn owners, and a way to communicate with owners of your suite exclusively.

Many owners already use this program in their home neighborhoods. It is a very easy way to keep up on what is going on and to have quick updates and conversations as a group. If you are not familiar with  Nextdoor.com you can check out the website before you sign up.
Note:  If you are already signed up for a Nextdoor account in your home neighborhood, you will not be able to use the same email address for your Marsh Harbour Inn Suite. You must use a separate email address.
Here's how to join our group:

1. Join the NextDoor Bald Head Wynd at this link:
https://nextdoor.com/invite/ykjcubfrqepzutnztbhz
