Maryland IOLTA Honor Roll

MVLS would like to acknowledge with special appreciation the following Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts (IOLTA) Honor Roll members who pay premium interest rates on lawyers trust account.
The interest on money held in these accounts, which is not owed to the client, is pooled to provide civil legal aid to low-income Marylanders.  IOLTA money has been an important source of funding for MVLS and our legal service partners and we thank these members for their support.

There's never been an easier way to support MVLS! Please consider joining the Sustainers Circle.  Sustainers Circle members pledge a monthly donation to MVLS, either though automatic credit card transactions or monthly checks.

These regular donations create a steady and predictable stream of revenue that ensures the consistency of our pro bono services and helps us reduce fundraising costs.

Case of the Month: Becky's Story

MVLS recently received this note from "Becky," a grateful client, and I wanted to share it with you so you could see firsthand how your support of MVLS can change someone's life.

Becky called MVLS after she left her abusive husband and needed a divorce.  An MVLS volunteer lawyer not only handled her divorce for free, but also helped Becky create a will so her young daughter's future would be secure.  Months later, when the IRS contacted Becky about her ex-husband's unpaid taxes, another MVLS volunteer helped her file for innocent spouse relief.

Every day in Maryland, low and moderate income people like Becky have legal problems and can't afford a lawyer.  In fact, the same week that Becky called us for help, MVLS fielded hundreds of phone calls from people needing a lawyer to meet basic needs like housing, safety and economic security.

With gratitude for your past support of MVLS as a donor, volunteer or partner, I hope you'll consider making a year-end, tax-deductible gift today to help keep our programs strong and meet the demand for civil legal services.  Your donation will immediately be put to work leveraging the volunteer spirit of the private bar to provide access to justice to all Marylanders. Please click the button below to donate online. October Update
Over the course of
nine sessions, JustAdvice

helped 139 clients in October. Sessions at the Center for Urban Families,  exington Market, and the District Court allowed our volunteer lawyers to help local citizens with legal issues ranging from landlord/tenant disputes to bankruptcy to expungement.

JustAdvice also hit a special milestone in October 2013: 2,500 clients served since the clinic's founding in 2009.  Thank you to our great staff of 15 student attorneys, Professor Leigh Maddox, and the nearly 20 volunteer lawyers for making October such a successful month.

 Want to Volunteer?

JustAdvice is always looking for more volunteer lawyers to help out with our weekly sessions.  The clinic needs volunteers to cover many different areas of expertise. Becoming a JustAdvice volunteer is a wonderful alternative to taking full pro bono cases.

Our sessions this month are:

Tues, Nov 12 from 12-3pm at Lexington Market

Thurs, Nov 14 from 2-5pm at the District Court for Baltimore City on Fayette St.

Tues, Nov 19 from 12-3pm at The Living Well

Thurs, Nov 21 from 2-5pm at the District Court for Baltimore City on Fayette St.

Tues, Nov 26 from 12-3pm at Lexington Market

Contact MVLS Deputy Director Leigh Maddox at 443-451-4064 or for more information.

 MVLS to Participate in #GivingTuesday

Mark your calendar! Thanksgiving is November 28th, Black Friday is November 29th, Cyber Monday is December 2nd and Giving Tuesday is December 3rd.

#GivingTuesday is a grassroots movement to designate the Tuesday after Thanksgiving as a national day of giving. If you think the holiday season should be more about community and less about consumerism, we hope you'll join the movement by making a donation to MVLS on December 3, 2013 or calling to accept a pro bono case.
Your support is so important to the continuation of our program and will ensure that low-income Marylanders have access to a lawyer to keep custody of their children, stay in their home, divorce an abusive spouse, clear up a IRS tax dispute and more.
