Gratitude amidst Adversity

As the world endures its eight month of varying quarantine conditions, celebrating Thanksgiving gives one pause - are we thankful for the adversarial conditions we are in?

Gary J. Kennedy, director of geriatric psychiatry at Montefiore Medical Center, noticed that Holocaust survivors shared one common trait - resilience in adversity. “It’s the norm, not the exception,” he said. “Those that survived are a select group.”

Where does that core of resilience come from? One cannot rise above hardship again and again, if there isn't a kernel of hope. And before one is even hopeful, one is grateful for that one tiny bleep of blessing, from a piece of bread that is a lifeline to a prisoner, or a tiny random act of kindness from a stranger that saved one's life in the Jewish concentration camps,

What are you grateful for? Will it help you feel hope as 2020 ends, and a new year begins?
