On July 30, 1965 President Lyndon B Johnson signed into law a health insurance plan for elderly Americans known as Medicare. Johnson signed it into law at the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library in Independence Missouri. Former President Harry S Truman was enrolled as the first Medicare beneficiary and received the very first Medicare card.
President Johnson wanted recognize our 33rd President Harry S.Truman because he was the first President to propose national health insurance, which was opposed by Congress at the time.
