Puerto Rico has been devastated by two recent hurricanes, and families of many Cemetery employees have been hit hard.  

Mount Auburn will donate $5,000 to:  
Massachusetts United for Puerto Rico Fund  -  the fund recently announced by Boston Mayor Marty Walsh.   Please consider joining us by making  your own donation.

Fall at Mount Auburn 

Fall is a terrific time to visit Mount Auburn. Our diverse collection of over 5,000 trees attract many "leaf peepers" this time of year. P lants  and wildlife combined with funerary art and architecture, make for an unforgettable experience.

Digitization Days

Join us for a Community Digitization Day where the public can bring in a range of paper-based materials, such as photographs and letters, that help to tell the story of their community, Mount Auburn Cemetery, and the nearly 100,000 people buried and commemorated there.

Mount Auburn Receives Grant for Plant Collections
 
The Friends of Mount Auburn is delighted to announce that we have received a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences (IMLS) in support of a new plant collections map application that will help guide visitors onsite or online.
 
The grant will allow staff to merge our existing plant collections database with ESRI GIS (geographic information system) technology, add more plant information to our website, and create a mobile data application.   Learn more...

Celebrating the Conservation of Martin Milmore's Coppenhagen Monument

We are delighted to announce the completed conservation of the Coppenhagen Monument (1874) on Sycamore Avenue. The monument represents the work of Martin Milmore (1844-1883), one of Boston's leading 19th-century sculptors.  In 1871, Mehitable Coppenhagen, married to German-born Arnold Coppenhagen, commissioned Milmore to create a memorial for her daughter, Maria Frances Coppenhagen, who died at age thirty.   Read more...

Person of the Month:  Maria Oakey Dewing (1845 - 1927)

American Painter Maria Richards Oakey Dewing's is known to this day for her paintings of flowers.  The remarkable lighting in her work is likely a result of painting outdoors, a technique she may have learned from her mentor, the noted stained glass designer John La Farge.  More
