Pastor Andrea's Sermon: "The Lamb"

Dear MBPPC Worship Community,

This Sunday is All Saints’ Day. All Saint’s Day is a time to remember that there are many throughout the ages who have faithfully served the Lord. I am the great-granddaughter of missionaries to China, who lived cross-culturally and served in hospitals in the name of Jesus. I am sure that you also can point to those who have gone before you, who were witnesses to life and faith and part of what the Bible calls the “communion of saints.” It is also a time to express our gratitude for all who kept the faith, and for the prophetic voices who have called the church to be faithful in life and service. Some of the prophetic voices that have most influenced me are Martin Luther King Jr. and Byran Stevenson of the EJI (Equal Justice Initiative).

Who are the prophetic voices that have influenced you?

We give thanks for all who have witnessed to God’s justice and peace in every nation. I love these words from the Companion to the Book of Common Worship

"To rejoice with all the faithful of every generation expands our awareness of a great company of witnesses above and around us like a cloud (Hebrews 12:1). It lifts us out of a preoccupation with our own immediate situation and the discouragements of the present. In the knowledge that others have persevered, we are encouraged to endure against all odds (Hebrews 12:1-2). Reminded that God was with the faithful of the past, we are reassured that God is with us today, moving us and all creation toward God’s end in time.”

This Sunday we will explore Revelation 7 together, a book addressed to God’s people in a specific time, people living under the thumb of Rome and seeking to remain faithful to Christ despite suffering and persecution. Their hope and ours is not a military machine but, “The Lamb.”

What Does It Mean to Be Presbyterian?

Being Presbyterian means being part of a Christian community rooted in God's grace, guided by Scripture, and committed to following Jesus Christ. As members of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), we believe in thoughtful faith, shared leadership, and serving others with love and compassion.

The word Presbyterian means "elder," reflecting our tradition of leadership shared by pastors and elected elders. Grounded in the Reformed tradition, we emphasize God's grace, the importance of Scripture, and the celebration of Baptism and Communion.

Presbyterians believe the church is "reformed and always being reformed according to the Word of God." We are called to grow in faith, welcome others, pursue justice, and put God's love into action.

At Mt. Baker Park Presbyterian Church, we live out this calling through our mission of Transforming Lives through Christ's Love.

It's time to fall back! Remember to set your clocks BACK one hour at 2:00 a.m. or before bedtime.

Celebrate the cherished memories of loved ones this Sunday. On All Saints’ Day, we join Presbyterian churches in remembering and giving thanks for the faithful who have gone before us. We honor their lives, celebrate their witness, and find comfort in God’s promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. As we remember those we love and cherish, we rejoice in the communion of saints, united in faith, hope, and the everlasting love of God.

What does it mean to be a Christian in an age of artificial intelligence?

Drawing on the riches of Scripture and Christian spirituality, this talk invites listeners to understand and engage AI, not with fear, but with theological curiosity, wisdom, and hope.

The presentation will include an engaging question-and-answer and/or discussion session, depending on the size of the audience.

Come ready to explore how our faith speaks with surprising clarity to one of the most pressing questions of our time.

The MBPPC Harvest Luncheon will take place on Sunday, November 15th after church in the basement Social Hall.

Just like last year, we’ll enjoy each other’s company over good food. We’ll supply turkey and ham, and ask that you bring sides and deserts (think Thanksgiving). Want to help? Contact Mary Gentry at marylentry@comcast.net or Susan Daggett at sedaggett@juno.com.

Remember Our Ed Parks Memorial Snack Table for Metro Bus Drivers: Please donate small, packaged snack items and/or bottled water for our hallway table. Metro bus drivers are encouraged to take a snack with them after using the church restroom. Popular items are: peanut butter or cheese sandwich crackers, trail mix, granola bars, small candy bars, chips, and nuts. You may drop off snacks/drinks by the office door after the worship service, or arrange a drop off at the office. We are running low on beverages and donations will be greatly appreciated.

It is now giving pledge time at MBPPC. Pick up a pledge card in person or pledge online: 2027 Giving Pledge

It is now possible to make donations to Mt Baker Park online using a computer or your phone. Simply visit: https://onrealm.org/MBPPC/give/now.

You may give either by credit card or by ACH transactions (transfer from your checking account). Or you can set up recurring donations from this form. There is no need to log in or have an account – your email address will identify you to record your donation towards your pledge.

By default, these donations will be used for the operating expenses of the church. Of course, you can continue to make your contributions during the offering time in the service. Any questions can be directed to the treasurer, Mike Stob (stob@calvin.edu).

Community Happens Here!

At Mt Baker Park Presbyterian Church, our building is more than a place for Sunday worship. It is also a place where people from our community can gather for encouragement, support, and connection.

We are grateful to welcome several community partners, including

  • Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), which supports individuals seeking recovery from alcohol addiction;
  • Al-Anon, which offers support to family members and friends affected by someone else’s drinking; and
  • Co-Dependents Anonymous (CoDA), which helps individuals develop healthier relationships, boundaries, and patterns of behavior.

Each week, these groups create an atmosphere of honesty, healing, growth, and hope. We are glad MBPPC can be a welcoming space where this important work takes place.

If you or someone you know is in need of the support of any of these groups, all of the weekly meeting are open to everyone.

Tuesday Morning Bible Study meets via Zoom, 9:00-10:00 AM. This group reviews the previous Sunday's scripture readings and sermon. It's a great time to get to know others and to be encouraged in your faith. To take part, email Ellen McLain for the Zoom invitation.

Men’s Bible Study meets every Wednesday via Zoom at 8:00-9:30 AM. Members select different books of the Bible to read through chapter-by-chapter. Email Howard Strickler for the Zoom invitation.

"Seasonings" of Thanksgiving Fall Devotional

Week 4:

Cloves: Strength of Faith

“Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.”
 -James 1:3-4

Theme: Learning to remain grateful while God strengthens us through life's challenges.

Cloves may be small, but their flavor is powerful. A few can influence an entire recipe. Faith works in much the same way. Jesus taught that faith as small as a mustard seed can accomplish extraordinary things.

Some seasons bring disappointment, uncertainty, grief, and unexpected changes. Yet those experiences do not have to destroy our gratitude. We can thank God for His sustaining grace while still acknowledging our pain.

Sometimes our greatest spiritual growth comes not from what God removes but from how He strengthens us while we endure.

Reflection: How has a difficult season helped me develop greater faith, patience, or dependence on God?

Weekly Challenge: Identify one difficult experience from this year. Write down how God sustained you through it, even if the situation remains unresolved.

Prayer Focus: Lord, strengthen my faith and help me recognize Your presence even in difficult seasons.
