Dean's List for 2015-2016 Announced!
At the end of July, 59 freshman, sophomore and junior students were notified by the Dean's office that they had made the Dean's List for 2015-2016. This means that these students maintained a 3.5 grade average for the entire academic year. Congratulations to all! For names, click here.

Paul Tremblay's office may be in the library, but his outgoing and enthusiastic personality fills the NYCPM halls beyond. Mr. Tremblay earned his MLIS degree from McGill University in Montréal in 1997, and earned an additional MA in Media Arts at Long Island University (LIU) in Brooklyn in 2006. Wound Care Symposium Offers Interdisciplinary View
The 2016 NY Wound Care symposium, "Establishing a Course of Excellence," held in conjunction with Mt. Sinai's 19th Annual Complex Coronary, Valvular and Vascular Cases (CCVVC) conference on Tuesday June 14th, was a tremendous success.

NYCPM Has Strong Presence at the FIP World Congress of Podiatry
The International Federation of Podiatrists (Fédération Internationale des Podologues- FIP) World Congress took place in beautiful Montréal from May 26-28, 2016. Dozens of countries were represented and the many aspects and dimensions of podiatry were celebrated.

Dr. Simis Ntuli (University of Johannesburg), Denise Freeman, DPM (Midwestern University), and Peter Barbosa, PhD (NYCPM), all presenters at Podiatric Medical Education Session 1 in Montréal.

Peter Barbosa, PhD, Professor of Pre-Clinical Sciences at NYCPM, delivered two presentations within the Podiatric Medical Education sessions, one highlighting information technology at NYCPM and the second detailing the curriculum in empathy and the biopsychosocial model in USA podiatric medicine. Mexico will host the next World Congress scheduled for 2019.
Anthony Iorio, DPM (2x) and Students Win Poster Competitio ns
Anthony Iorio, DPM, MPH  received the Best Poster Award for a case study in wound care new technologies at the International Federation of Podiatrists World Congress in May (see related story, above), and then six weeks later earned First Place for his poster "The Advantages of Using Dermoscopy in the Diagnosis of Acral Melanoma from Other Podiatric Lesions" at the National APMA meeting in Philadelphia in July.
    At the same APMA meeting, four NYCPM students - HyunJi Boo (2019), Suganthi Kandasamy (2017), Dhagash P. Patel (2017), and Manshiben K. Patel (2017) -- won Outstanding Poster Abstract (Single Case or Small Case Study/Series), for the top three poster abstracts as selected by a panel of judges appointed by the Annual Meeting Committee.

Residents Celebrated at Festive Dinner
 
On June 27, NYCPM celebrated all of its residents at a festive dinner attended by NYCPM faculty as well as officials from Metropolitan Hospital Center, Harlem and Lincoln Hospitals.  Guests included resident graduates: (l. to r. in photo above) Adrienne Estes, DPM, Sally Fayed, DPM and Ilya Makarovskiy, DPM (who had all recently found out they had passed the ABFAS Qualification exam); current residents: Reem Sheikh, DPM, the Incoming Chief Resident, 2016-2017; Hazel Merced Vargas, DPM; Robert Peck, DPM; Timothy Bui, DPM; Michael Bastani, DPM and Vu Nguyen, DPM; and the three incoming residents: (l. to r. in photo below) Adam Bernatsky, DPM; Sarah Mohamed, DPM, and  Anthony Jabra, DPM, all members of the NYCPM Class of 2016. 

2015-16 Podiatric Medical Review (PMR) is Available
Aaron Bradley and  Danielle Boyle (both 2017), Co-Editors-in-Chief, proudly announced the completion of Volume 24,  2015-2016 PMR . Free copies are available in the library and on the NYCPM website
   This year, the  PMR editorial board received a record number of 30 abstract submissions. Over six months of extensive editing rounds and peer reviews,19 articles were carefully selected for publication. In the next few months,  PMR will be distributed nationally to podiatric residency programs.
    The co-editors also announced the 2016-2017 editors:
Sang Hyub Kim and  Djavlon Khakimov , Co-Editors-in-Chief (both 2018);  Sara Stachura and  Shadi Aouad , Senior Editors (both 2018);  Brittany Hervey (2018) and
Diltaj Singh (2019), Editors.

Liswood (1993)
Receives APMA Meritorious Service Award 
According to PM News, NYSPMA Vice President Paul Liswood, DPM (1993) has been selected as a recipient of the 2016 APMA Meritorious Service Award, which recognizes outstanding accomplishments on the local, state, or regional level in scientific, professional, and civic endeavors that have had a profound impact on podiatric medicine.      

The award, approved by both the APMA Awards & Recognition Committee and the APMA Board of Trustees, honors Dr. Liswood for his role in advocating for the NY podiatric scope of practice, extending the message about podiatry's critical role in preventive care, and his numerous research-based presentations on the significant healthcare cost reductions realized by using a foot and ankle specialist.

NYCPM alumnus Rochelle Volosov, DPM (2010), is a practicing doctor at Family Foot & Ankle Specialists in Piscataway and Hillsborough, New Jersey. She treats patients with all types of injuries and problems. She is passionate about trauma, diabetic wound care and children.

Poster
The effect of small molecule ligands on DNA structure: a dictionary and a wiki, by Zev Leifer, PhD , presented at the Cell Symposium: Transcriptional Regulation in Development and Disease in Chicago, June 26 - 28. Dr. Leifer reports that the poster describes a wiki that he created to organize and present a large amount of information on the effect of small molecules on DNA topology. The effect of such changes on the binding of regulatory proteins was discussed, as were the biological and clinical implications.
