What's happening

Photo Club  is in full swing. The members are excited for all the new projects and lessons for the 2019-2020 school year. Photo Club has started working with Adobe Lightroom, where members can experiment with editing their own pictures.
In the upcoming months, Photo Club  will learn how to utilize T-Shirt and graphic design, as well as how to use a green screen to create mock weather reports.  Our members are looking forward to the many exciting projects offered this year!

Members have continued to do MyFuture in the Computer Lab. There is a new MyFuture challenge coming up, beginning on November 4th and ending November 15th.
All club members will have the opportunity to write a description for an app that they would like to create. The Club then has the opportunity to win a $5,000 grant based on the app ideas. Our Club won the contest in September, and would use this grant money to purchase drawing tablets.

Many Club members are choosing to play Prodigy, a math game where they can create their own wizard and win tournaments by solving math problems. Nitrotype and coding projects are a few more of our members' favorite Computer Lab activities.

Members ages 10 and up have been working to make their own beat maps. They work on the Virtual Reality set to create their own maze on the Beat Saber game. Each maze is matched to a song by our members. Some of our members have been working together to create their own song, which often takes at least an hour to complete.

The Teen Room has been busy with members competing in various tournaments. October was Carpetball month and November is Connect 4 month.

Curling Teen nights at Nantucket Ice have been a huge hit with our teens! There is Curling Teen night scheduled for November 8th and November 15th.

Thursday night Teen Nights are from 6:00pm-8:00pm and are offered for members in 6th grade and older. Friday night Teen Nights are from 8:00pm-10:30pm and Saturday nights are from 7:00pm-10:00pm. Teens in 8th grade or older may attend Friday and Saturday nights for FREE!

The Art Room continues to be in full swing as we move further into the school year and into Fall programming. The Fine Arts Club offers exciting Art Projects using more advanced and sophisticated art supplies and techniques.  The small groups let the children enjoy, learn, appreciate and get one on one attention while creating. The members have had the opportunity to sculpt, paint, collage and draw. The members' art pieces will be put on display during the Club's 2nd Annual Art Show this spring.

Science Lab has been "exploding" with fun and learning every Thursday at 4:00.  The members have had fun experimenting with simple, everyday household ingredients to make rainbows, helicopters, small explosions, lava, and even performed an egg drop! Science Lab will offer future lessons using magnets, making simple machines and making simple electricity.

Music Makers continues to meet every Friday from 2:45 - 3:45.  The members of Music Makers have learned (and continue to learn) how to read music, play 10 different notes on the recorder and have been working on a few songs for their debut at Stroll. They are really working hard to perfect their new musical skills!

Leslie from the Nantucket Athenaeum comes every Tuesday from 3:00-4:00 to play Book Bingo and once a month she brings her button making machine for making personalized buttons.  The teens love to participate in Leslie's activities too.

Junior Bakers is another popular activity that happens in the Art Room, every Monday from 4:00-5:15.  We have made some delicious baked items so far this year.  Our first annual Bake Off held on Monday October 28th (Jr. Bakers vs Jr. Chefs) was a huge success! The two groups were challenged to make the most delicious and creepiest decorated cupcakes. Congrats to the winners - Jr Bakers! Our next Bake off, featuring apple and pumpkin pies, is November 25th.  November should be a busy and fun-filled month!

The Power Hour Homework Club is going strong! We have members coming into the Learning Center every day to work on their homework, with over 120 different members who have been in so far this year! We had our first Power Hour Party of the year on November 1st! Power Hour is held Monday through Thursday from 2:30-4:00. Members who sign a Power Hour contract and attend Power Hour regularly are invited to monthly Power Hour parties!

Are you concerned about your child's reading, or would you like to see them receive more reading instruction? Then check out BookNook!  BookNook is a fun, web-based reading app that selects short books and vocabulary words for your members based on their reading level. The 20-30 minute lessons mix games and interactive questions with the reading and adapt in difficulty as your child learns, teaching them different reading standards as they progress towards the next reading level. BookNook time in the Learning Center is Mondays from 4:00-5:00 and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4:00-5:45. Whether your child is a struggling reader who could use some help catching up to their grade level, a strong reader who would like to improve, or somewhere in between, BookNook can help! If you're interested in signing up your member or finding out more about the program, please visit Danny in the Learning Center or send an email to  [email protected] .

The LEGO Robotics team is off to a great start this season! This is our fourth year competing in the FIRST LEGO League, a world-wide competition where teams of up to ten 4th-8th graders compete against each other in a robot competition and share a project relating to that year's theme. The theme this year is City Shaper, a look at ways you can improve your community through buildings and public spaces. The team has already completed programming the robot to accomplish several missions and they have a promising project in the works! Practices are on Mondays from 5:00-5:45 and Thursdays from 4:00-5:45.

Boy Athlete of the Month
Jackson Agnello 4th Grade

Jackson has started off the year strong in athletics, playing flag football and dodgeball. Jackson led the DII Oh Deer Eagles to a 4-2 record and 1st place in the division. Jackson was selected to play for the 3rd and 4th grade travel football team. The team traveled to the Vineyard and came home with the win. Jackson will play in the New England Patriots Regional Tournament this weekend!

Jackson lives on the football field at the club, always playing with a football or working to improve his game. Jackson is also a good role model to his peers, always being respectful and playing every sport the right way. Jackson has had a great start to the year and we look forward to seeing what he moving forward this falls into the rest of the flag football season and throughout the year. Congratulations Jackson!

Girl Athlete of the Month
Lennox Voss 4th Grade

Lennox has had a great start to the fall, participating in the 3 rd-4 thgrade flag football division. Lennox has participated in flag football for years now and continues to get better and better each year. A member of the Santos Redskins for Division II, Lennox helped take down the eventual division champion panthers for a big win, scoring TWO touchdowns in the game. Although the Redskins eventually lost in the semifinals, Lennox and the rest of the team had a great year as a team, competing in every game.

Lennox always brings a positive attitude day in and day out, with a smile on her face every day. Her attitude is positive, but competitive. She always works her hardest for her team and for herself. Lennox is a good role model to both her fellow team members and to the rest of her division. After her performance this fall, we look forward to seeing what else Lennox will accomplish this school year. Congratulations Lennox!
