of the Month!

Aubrey Lombardi -1st Grader of the Month
Aubrey Lombardi always has a smile on her face at the club! Throughout the week, Aubrey will find herself in many different rooms inside the club, participating in a wide variety of activities. She paints and crafts in the art room, works on her basketball skills in the gym, and improves her typing skills in the computer lab. Recently, Aubrey has joined our National Photography Program, where she is learning new methods in graphic design and how to properly use a camera. If you can't find Aubrey in any of these places, she is most likely in the games playing bumper pool with her friends!

What's Happening

The  Art Room is always a buzz with programs, activities, Clubs and of course art! December is especially busy and fun in the
Art Room. There are 13 members that have been rehearsing for Saturday's caroling Stroll performance downtown. There will be singing, performing and the debut of members that learned how to play the recorder in Music Makers. It should be a fun day! Hope to see you there!

The week of December 8th-13th is "Gift Week" in the Art Room. Each day, there will be a specific art activity that the members will create, paint, bake, craft, etc.... and give as a gift to a family member or friend.  The kids will be shown how to wrap and label their gifts, make their own cards, and create ornaments. Sign-ups for "Gift Week" will be in the Art Room.

In the New Year, Art Programming will include Jr. Bakers, National Fine Arts Club, Science Lab, Book Bingo and Drama Matters.  We will start the New Year with the announcement of the play in Drama Matters and when tryouts will be.  After last year's successful play, many more members are interested in joining Drama Matters to perform and create the set.

There is one last "Bake-off" this year! On December 16th, the Jr. Bakers will take on the Jr. Chefs to see who makes the best gingerbread cookies!  The last "Bake-Off" between the Jr. Bakers and Jr. Chefs ended in a Jr. Bakers victory. The Jr. Bakers baked an apple pie incorporating blueberries and peaches, while the Jr. Chefs baked an apple pie with cherries and cranberries. Good luck to all bakers on December 16th!

In the  Computer Lab, members have loved playing Prodigy, an online math game where members can play against their friends. MyFuture continues to be a popular program, where members are improving their typing, coding, and computer skills.

In the last weeks of November, MyFuture members 8 years and older worked hard to create their own app ideas. These ideas were submitted to a national MyFuture competition where each competing club has the opportunity to win a $500 gift card. We will keep you updated!

Our  Kids on Ice Program is going strong with over 20 participating members. Elisabeth walks the kids over to the rink every Thursday right after school, where the kids are free to skate and have fun on the ice. This program is free but has limited space. A signed permission slip must be filled out before a member is able to go. Contact the club if you have any questions.

Photo Club has many exciting projects going on as we move into the New Year. Members have been using graphic design to create their own T-Shirts, exploring the island to capture beautiful photos, and taking and editing portraits of their fellow Photo Club members. Their next major project will be called "News Friday", where the members will write a script together, record different episodes, and learn the basic workings of a newsroom.

Our Torch Club members have been a great help throughout the club. They have been assisting the front desk with locker room passes, running tournaments in the games room, and helping our staff with events. At our November Family Fun Night, over 20 members of Torch Club were responsible for making food, setting up for the event, serving and cleanup. A big thank you to Torch Club!

O ur Torch Club kids have stated that they love the feeling of helping out the club in any way they can, especially in aiding younger members when they have problems. After Winter Break, there will be an election held for President, Vice President, and Treasurer. Good luck to all candidates!  Torch Club members also plan to hold fundraisers in the form of Bake Sales to purchase new Torch Club shirts.
Torch Club is a national Boys & Girls Club of America program. It is a "club within the Club" and aims to develop key leadership skills in our youth. This Club is for members 5th grade and up. If your child would like to join Torch Club, please see Shinelle or the front desk.

Every Thursday at 3 PM, our teen coordinator Tara takes a field trip out to  SeaPony Farm , where the kids are able to learn how to care for animals. This a field trip favorite, as the kids are able to pet and play with horses, donkeys, and alpacas!  Last trip, the kids were able to see horses get their feet taken care of and take home some souvenirs...hoof clippings! Most were stoked (not all of them though).

The  Junior Chefs have been cooking up a storm. In November, the chefs prepared ice cream cone cakes, turkey clubs, baked ham and turkey croissants, and Russian potato salad. They also catered our Family Fun Night with homemade Mac n' Cheese. A big thank you to Joy and Greg Margolis at the Culinary Center for hosting and teaching our Junior Chefs. The  Junior Chefs program is available for members 5th grade and older. It takes place Monday-Wednesday, 4-5:30 PM.

In the Teen Room, our members have been playing Connect 4, melting crayons for art projects, and participating in Date Smart. Date Smart is an interactive program for 6 th graders and up, where members can ask questions in a judgement free zone and learn better how to form and manage personal relationships.

Teen Nights are always popular among our older members. Curling at the rink on Friday nights and volleyball and soccer on Saturdays keeps teen members busy. There has also been glow in the dark games outside on the field, including soccer and manhunt.

Thursday night Teen Nights are from 6-8 PM  and are offered for members in 6th grade and older. Friday night Teen Nights are from 8-10:30 PM and Saturday nights are from 7-10 PM. Teens in 8th grade or older may attend Friday and Saturday nights for FREE!
The Power Hour Homework Club continues to aid our members in completing their homework on time and excelling in the classroom. We have members coming into the Learning Center every day to work on their homework, with over 120 different members who have been in so far this year! Our second Power Hour Party of the year will be held on December 13th. Power Hour is held Monday through Thursday from 2:30-4:00. Members who sign a Power Hour contract and attend Power Hour regularly are invited to monthly Power Hour parties!

Are you concerned about your child's reading or  would like them to receive more reading instruction? Then check out BookNook!  BookNook is a fun, web-based reading app that selects short books and vocabulary words for your members based on their reading level. The 20-30 minute lessons mix games and interactive questions with the reading and adapt in difficulty as your child learns, teaching them different reading standards as they progress towards the next reading level. BookNook time in the Learning Center is Mondays from 4:00-5:00 and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4:00-5:45. Whether your child is a struggling reader who could use some help catching up to their grade level, a strong reader who would like to improve, or somewhere in between, BookNook can help! If you're interested in signing up your member or finding out more about the program, please visit Danny in the Learning Center or send an email to Danny at [email protected].
The LEGO Robotics team is headed to the Worcester Polytechnic Institute this Sunday, December 8th, to compete in the First Lego League. This is a world-wide competition where teams of 4th-8th graders compete against each other in a robot competition and share a project relating to that year's theme. The theme this year is City Shaper, a look at ways you can improve your community through buildings and public spaces. The team has completed programming the robot to accomplish the many missions he will be undertaking. Good luck to all competing members!  For the remainder of the year, Lego Robotics practices will be held on Mondays and Thursdays, 5:00-5:45 PM. This program is open to any member 4th-8th grade.

Boy Athlete of the Month:
JJ Chennis 4th Grade

JJ has had a great start to the year - on the field, on the court, and at the club in general. He has competed in Division II football, dodgeball, and soccer, leading his teams to many victories throughout the season. He is currently preparing for the in-house basketball season by spending many hours in the gym each week, practicing his skills.
When he is not participating in sports, JJ is playing football or hanging out with friends in the computer lab or games room. He serves as a good role model to his peers and to his little brother Jayden by always playing his hardest and remaining respectful at tough times. Good luck to JJ throughout the rest of the year and Congratulations!

Girl Athlete of the Month:
Rowan Paul 4th Grade

Rowan has had a busy start to her year, juggling Division II field hockey, cheerleading, and dodgeball. She is excited to begin her fourth sport of the school year - basketball. While Rowan is a fiercely competitive player, she never fails to keep her positive attitude and a smile on her face. Her coaches have said that Rowan picks up sports quickly, but also works hard every day to improve her skills. She is a positive role model to both her fellow team members and her fellow club members, as she brings this attitude with her as she goes about her day in the club. We look forward to seeing what else this school year brings for Rowan. Congratulations Rowan!
