Veena Stone- First Grader of the month

Veena is an adorable 1st grader who has molded right into the exciting environment here at NBGC. She's polite, helpful and loves being involved in everything.

Veena participates in Reading Buddies, a program where 5th & 6th graders spend a half hour each week reading with a 1st grader. She loves being in the Art Room, especially on Fridays which is Cooking Day. When Leslie comes from the Atheneum to do Button Making with the kids, Veena is sure to be there.
This year she has also participated in Club sports. She played on the NBGC DIII "Links" Girls Basketball Team.

Coloring, playing GaGa outside and playing Air Hockey in the Games Room are just a few things among all the things she looks forward to when she comes to the Club.

He loves sports! This year Akeel was on the NBGC boys travel basketball team as well as the DII Mavericks basketball team. He also joined the very first NBGC soccer league. Akeel has participated in Triple Play, a national BGCA program that encompasses overall wellness of the mind, body, and soul.

When he's not playing basketball, he enjoys watching and supporting his friends on other teams. When the weather is nice, Akeel can be found outside throwing the football around with his friends.

This year Jayquan played on the NBGC boys travel basketball team as well as the Jr. NBA Nets team. He played running back and wide receiver on the NBGC DI Eagles football team, who took home the championship title this year!

Outside of sports, Jayquan has been involved in many other areas of the Club. What's happening

The Games Room continues to stay busy with members playing pool, air hockey, carpet ball, arcade games, and Ping-Pong. Carlos, our Games Room coordinator encourages members to participate in various tournaments to work on and show off their skills!

In the Learning Center, Power Hour Homework Club is going on every day. The next Power Hour Party is scheduled for March 30th.  Danny, our Learning Center coordinator has been busy working on ideas from Code.org. Members have been working on CodeCombat.com and are going to start coding in Maze with Angry Birds. Danny will be working with members on the Whitlock Writing Contest in the next few weeks! Don't forget to enter this contest for a chance to win $100!

This week in the Computer Lab, members are completing surveys for Boys & Girls Club of America. Based on youth development research and more than a century of Clubs' own experience, Boys & Girls Club leaders articulated a new theory of
change in 2010. The Formula for Impact depicts how Clubs put our youth development mission in action. It identifies who Clubs serve, shows how
they do that, and what they hope to accomplish with young people. The Formula for Impact guides Clubs in helping youth achieve positive outcomes in three priority areas: Academic Success, Good Character and Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles.

In 2011, BGCA launched the National Youth Outcomes Initiative (NYOI), a system grounded in the Formula for Impact and built to measure the impact of Clubs using a common set of research informed indicators of our priority outcomes. NYOI's key tool for gathering outcomes data is a survey administered to Club members each spring. BGCA continues to provide training and technical assistance to enable local Club organizations to use NYOI data effectively.

The Teen Room is always full of energized teens hanging out with their friends! Tara, our Teen Room coordinator organizes various tournaments throughout the week. The teen culinary club has been cooking up delicious treats with Tara 3 days a week!

The Art Room is always full of creative and artistic members! Caitlin, our Art Room always comes up with amazing ideas for different art projects! We love having our members artwork displayed around the Club!

Winter Break

Though Winter Break week is much calmer and quieter, it does not lack in fun or creativity! During that week, most mornings started with making breakfast smoothies or breakfast burritos with Tara, Danny and Priscilla. The kids also had the option to get a little morning exercise either playing basketball with Andrew or by challenging Joe Friday and his sick moves to a Just Dance battle! Throughout each day we offered a variety of other activities. From field trips to the Whaling Museum, African Meeting House, the pool, Sconset playground, Photo Club field trips with Hugh, to all kinds of arts and crafts projects, board game tournaments, a daily soccer tournament with Shauna and Cory, and a NBGC talent show to end the week. All in all, it was a great week with time well spent with our awesome members!
