NRC's State Recycling Organization Affiliates: 20 and Counting!

Dear Fellow Colleagues in Recycling,

I'm elated to share more positive news about the NRC.

NRC now has 20 state-level recycling organizations (ROs) who have committed to formally affiliate!

The ROs -- for as long as I can remember (at least back to the late 1980's, if not before) -- have represented the heart and soul of the NRC. The leadership of these 20 affiliates will help guide NRC, make our advocacy and service delivery programs all the more comprehensive, and help to accelerate the NRC's aggressive rebuilding efforts.

On behalf of the entire NRC family, my appreciation goes out to the following affiliates:

  • California Resource Recovery Association
  • Georgia Recycling Coalition
  • Illinois Recycling Association
  • Indiana Recycling Coalition
  • Iowa Recycling Association
  • Kansas Organization of Recyclers
  • MassRecycle
  • Michigan Recycling Coalition
  • Recycling Association of Minnesota
  • Missouri Recycling Association
  • Nebraska State Recycling Association
  • New Mexico Recycling Coalition
  • New York State Association for Reduction, Reuse, and Recycling
  • Association of Ohio Recyclers
  • Association of Oregon Recyclers
  • Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania
  • Carolina Recycling Association
  • State of Texas Alliance for Recycling
  • Virginia Recycling Association
  • Associated Recyclers of Wisconsin

As I mentioned to the leaders of the ROs earlier this summer, there are important, game-changing opportunities within our reach. The recycling industry is at a point where cohesiveness and strength need to be demonstrated. Our industry has too much at stake for us not to join together. Now more than ever, to be effective at the national level, state and regional recycling organizations (ROs) need to speak through a strong and unified voice -- the National Recycling Coalition.

Mark L

I applaud these states for the commitment they are showing

through their affiliation. We will continue to engage the remaining state- and provincial-level recycling organizations as well, in the name of furthering our mutual goals.

Yours in Recycling,

Mark Lichtenstein

NRC President

Call for Nominations
2012 Board of Directors Elections

NRC sincerely hopes you will consider contributing your skills, energy, enthusiasm, and time to continuing to make NRC a vital organization in the world of recycling and sustainable materials management.

There are few niches that we continue to strive to fill including geographic diversity, skill diversity, and cultural diversity.  The regions that we would like to see more representation on the Board include the southeast, the northeast, and the southwest.   Skills we are looking to recruit include legal aid, accounting, program development, grant expertise, and creative/graphic design for materials development. However, everyone is encouraged and welcomed.

Interested in running for the NRC board? An electronic nomination form is now available on the NRC Website.
Deadline for submission of applications is Monday, August 20, 2012.

Candidates must be members in good standing for one year to be eligible to run for the board. This is your opportunity to shape the NRC in the image you envision!

NRC Launches "10 for 10" Campaign
By: Jeff Miller NRC Board and Fund Development Committee Member
Jeff Miller

To support its ongoing programs and to lay a sound financial foundation for future growth, the NRC is excited to announce its "10 for 10" campaign.  Over the coming months the NRC will be seeking to secure support and pledges of $10,000 from prominent companies, not-for-profit groups and government agencies. The City of Austin, Texas, Strategic Materials, Inc., and Covanta Energy Corporation were the first out the gate, and have already committed their full support!

The NRC hopes to announce even more pledges at our annual
membership meeting in Austin, Texas on August 27th.  Of course, lesser -- and certainly greater! -- amounts will be most welcomed. To that end, the NRC is also happy to report that since it launched its aggressive fund development program just a few weeks ago, in addition to the organizations noted above, it has also received pledges from the American Forest & Paper Association, and the RockTenn corporation.

To sustain a national voice that promotes the positive environmental and economic benefits of recycling requires resources which can take many forms. Fund Development Chair and Board Vice President Bob Gedert said, "It is our hope that forthcoming financial commitments mature into long-lasting and mutually beneficial relationships for all parties involved."

Through the tireless work of members of NRC Board's Finance Committee -- Treasurer Meg Morris and Susan Collins in particular -- the NRC is registered in all states as a
Bob Gedert
ognized, 501 (c) (3) charitable organization.  As such all donations can be acknowledged as tax-free donations to the full extent that the law allows. It is also worth noting that the NRC's fiscal year ends on March 31, 2013 so if an organization wants to get involved but can't commit any funds until first quarter 2013, that shouldn't be a deterrent.

To learn more about the "10 for 10" campaign inquiries should be directed to Bob at Robert.Gedert@gmail.com or our web site.

NRC Donor Policy: The NRC accepts contributions, donations and grants from individuals, non-profit organizations, foundations, associations, corporations and governmental entities to provide general financial support of the NRC, its programs, and its member services. Contributing donors will be recognized at pre-determined supporter levels as indicated on the annual Supporter Benefit Chart. The NRC logo and reference to the NRC name may be utilized by donors only in the prescribed manner consistent with current NRC policy. Donor understands that its contribution or donation position shall not be used to influence the NRC's principals or positions. Donors contributing to NRC acknowledge support of NRC's Mission and Guiding Principles.

Jill Buck to Keynote Meeting in August
August 27, 2012

NRC is very pleased to announce that Jill Buck will keynote the ROC meeting on August 27th at the NRC annual meeting. Jill Buck is a long-time friend of recycling and has spent decades working to promote sustainable behavior, especially with youth. Jill founded the Go Green Initiative, which is now the largest and fastest growing comprehensive environmental education program in the world, operating in all 50 U.S. states, 69 countries, and on five continents. The program has been endorsed by the National School Boards Association (NSBA), National Recycling Coalition, nine State PTA's, California Integrated Waste Management Board, California Resource Recovery Association, and many more.

Jill is also the host of "Go Green Radio," a weekly program on the U.S.'s largest internet talk radio station, www.VoiceAmerica.com.

Having addressed hundred's of audiences of wide diversity, the NRC is excited to offer our members and supporters the opportunity to meet Jill and hear what she has to say about the importance of being involved with sustainable initiatives. Please plan to attend the ROC meeting on August 27th.

The publisher of Resource Recycling magazine invites you to attend the third annual Resource Recycling Conference. The 2011 conference brought together nearly 600 people from all aspects of the recycling industry and the trade show bustled with 50+ exhibitors. Join us in Austin, Texas on August 28-29 for expert analyses of current trends and issues in the wide world of recycling and ensure that you stay abreast of the current landscape in municipal recycling.  Don't miss out on critical discussions of product stewardship, recycled paper markets, the shift to materials management, global perspectives on recycling, plastics recycling and so much more. The Resource Recycling Conference is provided in association with the National Recycling Coalition (NRC), the Recycling Organizations of North America (RONA), Keep America Beautiful (KAB) and the Product Stewardship Institute (PSI). NRC Strategic Plan

The NRC is happy to make available its working draft three year Strategic Plan. This is a living document that is being reviewed regularly by the NRC board in order to ensure the organization is focusing its efforts in areas where it can make a difference and truly move NRC to a position of prominence. Please feel free to review and provide commentary. NRC welcomes all input!
