NWSA RECOGNIZES NATASHA TSAKOS WITH THEATER ALUMNI RECOGNITION AWARD. FOLLOWS RECEPTION WITH KUSHNER'S POIGNANT "A BRIGHT ROOM CALLED DAY."
New World School of the Arts'
first ever Theater Alumni Recognition Award will be presented next week as the theater division launches its performance season with Tony Kushner's poignant A Bright Room Called Day. After careful review of alumni achievements and involvement with the global arts community, NWSA dean of theater Patrice Bailey along with theater faculty members and Dr. Jeffrey Hodgson, Provost of NWSA, nominated world-renowned multi-platform actor Natasha Tsakos as the recipient of the award. The Theater Alumni Recognition Award, established specifically this year in honor of the school's 30th anniversary, will be presented during a reception at the school. A Bright Room Called Day begins immediately following the award reception.
Upon receiving the news of her nomination, Natasha - who graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from New World School of the Arts college commented, "I have always been a bit of an outsider, or at least felt like one; Resisting rules and institutions. Yet, New World was a place where I felt safe to experiment, explore, create and even rebel. I am surprised and honored to be recognized. Never thought it would happen! It proves that however unconventional your journey may be, you should always walk towards your dreams. One step at a time."
Directed by Stuart Meltzer, NWSA college alumni, theater faculty member and Artistic Director of Zoetic Stage, the play will be presented by college theater students. "I know that A Bright Room Called Day will ignite a conversation," said Meltzer, "How wonderful will that be? And that is why, we as theater artists, can never shy away from issues, ideas and thought-provoking playwrights that permeate our culture. The play asks questions such as 'how could a man like Adolf Hitler get into power', 'how do we define evil' and 'how dangerous is complacency'. In my opinion, this play has never been more relevant than the fall of 2016. It was thrilling to work on the play with the actors and watch them connect the passages of 1932 to the front pages of The Miami Herald or The New York Times today."

NWSA PARTNERSHIP PRESENTS THE 2016 DANIEL LEWIS MIAMI DANCE SAMPLER
Celebrating its 30th Anniversary, New World School of the Arts
kicks off the dance season of events with a remarkable partnership between NWSA, Florida Dance Education Organization and DanceNOW! Miami to present the 2016 Daniel Lewis Miami Dance Sampler. The much anticipated concert celebrates the strength and diversity of the Miami dance scene and highlights renowned local companies and choreographers including Karen Peterson & Dancers, Ballet Flamenco La Rosa and the NWSA Dance Ensemble, among others, for a stellar lineup.
"These performances not only brings audiences together in an incredible evening ranging from Flamenco to yoga dance to classical ballet," explained Daniel Lewis, former New World School of the Arts dean of dance, "but they also bring the artists of the community together to honor and share each other's talent. I am so proud of the New World School of the Arts alumni who are contributing to this performance including Stephanie Fuentes, a recent graduate who has returned from New York to invest in our community, and performer Ana Bolt-Turrall, one of the program's first graduates who will be dancing with Pioneer Winter Collective."
After 24 years serving the South Florida community as NWSA's dean of dance, Lewis stepped down in 2011, becoming the first founding dean to retire from NWSA after having served since it opened its doors thirty years ago.

ADICATED RETROSPECTIVE II: [rooted:established art for academia] OFFERS THE ARTWORK OF NWSA LATE PROFESSOR TOM WYROBA AND WIFE STACEY MANCUSO
For a second installment of this exclusive exhibition, New World School of the Arts
has partnered with Design and Architecture Senior High [DASH] in Radicated Retrospective II: [rooted:established art for academia]. The show was conceived six years ago by husband-and-wife-team, Dr. Stacey Mancuso, former Principal of DASH, and her late husband Tom Wyroba - NWSA visual arts professor to raise funds for both institutions by offering guests the unique opportunity to purchase original artwork at an affordable price. Most of the 200 art pieces, regardless of the size, will be sold for $50 each and the proceeds will be used to continue funding the WyMan Scholarship Fund, benefiting both schools equally, through scholarships to New World School of the Arts visual arts college program.
"The exhibition is bitter-sweet... we miss Tom so much," said Maggy Cuesta, NWSA dean of visual arts. "Tom Wyroba gave so much of himself to every student that passed through his classroom - not only was he an admirable artist and educator, but he gave the best of himself to his students by supporting and promoting their talent and looking for ways to help them achieve their higher education goals. When he and Stacy first proposed the first
Radicated Retrospective
fundraising exhibition in 2010, we were thrilled with the opportunity it would offer students from NWSA and DASH who wanted to continue their art education in our visual arts college program. This second iteration of the show has taken a more meaningful form. The funds raised from the sale of Tom and Stacy's work will not only continue to offer a viable financial opportunity for students' education, but Tom's legacy will continue to thrive through every future student that has received the WyMan Scholarship Fund."
Opening Reception: October 29; 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Preview: October 28; 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
