New World School of the Arts returns to The Kampong National Tropical Botanical Garden in Coconut Grove with a unique exhibition highlighting the importance of our environmental landscape. The show continues the tradition of a performative brunch, examining the language of Miami's sub-tropical location through the lens of our landscape and our community. The Future Ain't What It Used to Be  examines our culture's ideas about preservation and the simultaneous projections of the future invoked in our attempts to manage the ever-changing landscape of South Florida. This year's event offers artworks created by New World School of the Arts college students, under the guidance of, or in collaboration with artist and NWSA faculty member Don Lambert. Works, which range from the ephemeral to the concrete, feature pirate radio transmission, performances in the landscape, video, sculpture, drawing, and large site-specific installations will activate the lush garden, and former home of Dr. David Fairchild, noted botanical explorer. A VIP Brunch offers fresh fare and tropical mimosas created in response to the students' artistic investigation.

Like us on Facebook SIDE SHOW - LAST WEEKEND!
With sold-out performances since opening day, the NWSA high school music theater students fill the house with the award-winning musical, Side Show, one last weekend. With book and lyrics by Bill Russell and music by Henry Krieger, with additional book material by Bill Condon, the musical is directed by NWSA theater faculty member Matthew Buffalo. " I have always been drawn to the music of Side Show," explained Buffalo, "however, as I started my directorial research, the message of the show drew me in even further. On the surface, Side Show can be seen as a heartwarming musical about the love of two sisters and the fascinating world of the freak shows of the past. After taking a closer look at the core of the musical, you will find a beautiful story of acceptance."

Like us on Facebook  SENSE & SENSIBILITY
The NWSA college junior class brings Jane Austin's beloved Sense & Sensibility to the studio stage, directed by NWSA faculty member James Randolph. Adapted by Kate Hamill, the play follows the lives of the Dashwood sisters set in 18th century England as they navigate acceptable social behavior in a society ripe with judgement and wit. " Sense and sensibility as a piece of dramatic literature, still has a lot to say," says Randolph. "The issues and struggles facing women and their status, relationships with the male dominated society she wrote about over 200 years ago is universal and timeless. At this time of redefining relationships between men and women and surge in the feminist movement it makes sense that we begin to see more and more stories of women keeping families going."

Like us on Facebook COLLEGE COMPOSITION CONCERT
Students of the New World School of the Arts music composition program will feature their very own world premieres in this special performance. Composers spend countless hours discovering their musical voices, by combining influence, ideas, tradition and notation skills, intended to deliver a musical message. NWSA prides itself for supporting the creation of new works that are studied and interpreted by live musicians in concert. This performance will signify the first time a composer's work comes to life for a live public, that in turn will provide feedback to the composers that may inspire them to alter their works to communicate an idea even more profoundly the next time it's performed. While composers work diligently to ensure that their ideas are notated with enough information for the talented performer to interpret their work correctly, the bigger question is whether or not they interfere or inspire the interpreters or allow the process to unfold naturally. What would Beethoven do?

This performance will highlight some of the following works: Nicolas Velasquez's Shion for clarinet quartet, Gabriel Aguilar's La Madrugada for cello and piano, Gabriela Iglesias' The Journey for string quartet and Jose Luis Hernandez's Blossom for jazz combo.

The New World School of the Arts Alumni Foundation has selected NWSA visual arts alumna Luna Goldberg (BFA 2011), as recipient of the 4th Inspiration Grant. Luna will utilize the grant to fund a portion of the production costs of At Memories Edge, a three-month-long exhibition to be presented at Florida International University. Her multidisciplinary show features new works examining local and international monuments whose fates have been questioned and challenged in recent years and will be activated by panel discussions with local and international artists, architects, and historians.

"I am certainly honored to be the recipient of this Inspiration Grant by my treasured alma mater!" notes Luna , who is also a Fulbright Post-Graduate Fellow in the Department of Art History at Tel Aviv University. "Much of my work in curatorial practice, arts education, and public programming over the years has been influenced by my time at New World School of the Arts, its extraordinary faculty and program of study, as well as my peers - many of whom continue to be collaborators. " Elizabeth Gainer, who chaired the selection committee which chose Goldberg and her work for the Inspiration Grant adds, "The Alumni Foundation was honored to assist with funding this important and timely piece; our fourth such grant since the Foundation's inception."

The NWSA Alumni Foundation, a non-profit corporation founded in 2012, plans to announce its fifth "Inspiration Grant" in 2020. The Grant is the centerpiece of the Foundation's mission to provide support to creative alumni projects and artistic endeavors, while also connecting NWSA alumni for collaboration across the years and around the globe.
