Blueberry season has arrived at Newfound, and everyone from chipmunks to children are enjoying this tasty treat. Blueberries are packed with nutrients (and flavor!), but the benefits don't end there. Blueberry bushes are an awesome, all natural, water filtering and erosion controlling superhero.
|
|
When it comes to water quality threats like stormwater pollution and erosion, one of our best defenses is a vegetative buffer of native plants. Of these, no native plant is a better example of adaptation to New England than the blueberry bush. It thrives in our acidic soil and tolerates wet and sandy areas as well as occasional flooding and even road salt!
You can find native, naturally growing blueberry bushes throughout Newfound in both the high bush and low bush varieties, but planting your own, especially along shorelines, is a great way to add to the vegetative buffer that keeps our water clean.
|
|
Along with all their benefits to land, water, and wildlife, blueberry bushes make an attractive and hardy yard and garden planting. Lowbush blueberries can now be purchased in rolls like sod to cover larger areas.

No bushes of your own? Visit a PYO Blueberry Farm, like local Kemah Farm in Alexandria, NH, to get your fix of blueberry flavor.

Stewardship Journal - Colleen Clausen
They say that "you learn something new every day" and that certainly seems to be the case for my season serving with the Newfound Lakes Region Association AmeriCorps. We have only served for about a month and a half so far and yet the amount of...

The Scoop on Poop
It's not just unsightly - it's a hazard to our water quality! Dog poop contains nutrients and sometimes harmful bacteria and parasites. When rainwater washes these things into our waterways it feeds algae and plant growth and lowers our water quality. It can even make the water unsafe for swimming. Pets and people alike enjoy time outside, but please keep our lakes and rivers clean and safe by picking up after your pets.
Song and dance makes everything more enjoyable. This catchy number from the Pacific Northwest, "Dog Doogity", is sure to make you boogy (and laugh) the next time you have to "bag it up."

Protect What You Love
Our water, our land, our community.
|
|
This spring we asked the community to join us in protecting this special place. The overwhelming response has allowed us to push forward with some exciting accomplishments! We are hard at work assessing and mitigating stormwater problems, maintaining your favorite trails and outdoor spaces, monitoring water quality throughout the watershed, and planning safe community events.
But there is so much more work to do!
Newfound is facing increasingly frequent large storm events that cause erosion and lower our water quality, the threat of invasive aquatic species, and a slow, but steady, decline in water quality over the past ten years.
Your membership with NLRA increases our capacity to mitigate these threats.
Through land conservation that protects water quality, stormwater mitigation projects, and public events that promote good stewardship, your support strengthens the resilience of Newfound to ensure our community will not just survive, but thrive, even in future times of hardship.
If you value our clean lake, our green forests, and our thriving community, please join now.
